Tonight's Glens Falls Golden Eagles Game Postponed

No game tonight between the Glens Falls Golden Eagles and the Newark Pilots.

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League has announced that the game has been postponed due to rain.  According to the National Weather Service, rain has been falling in Newark, a small town about 10 miles north of Geneva, all day, prompting Flood Watches and Warnings in the area.

No makeup date has been announced, but it already has been announced that the game will be made up as a doubleheader.

PENGUIN-SLAYER

Never during this year's postseason have the Pittsburgh Penguins been on the brink of elimination.  Until now. 

Jaromir Jagr's handy stick-work between the blues helped to develop the game-winning goal from Patrice Bergeron in double-overtime that gives the Boston Bruins a 3-0 series lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins.  

Jagr was working on the far boards, trying to prevent Evengi Malkin from skating away with the puck for the Penguins, effectively fished it away and dished it over to Brad Marchand, who passed it over to Bergeron for the tip-in that ended 95 minutes of hockey between the two clubs.

Now the Pittsburgh Penguins face an elimination game at the TD Garden, and the Boston Bruins are now 1 game away from their 2nd finals in 3 years, a surprising feat given three weeks ago they were staring down the barrel of a 3-goal deficit in the 3rd Period against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 7.

Game 4 is Friday night, in Boston.

GOLDEN

Glens Falls Golden Eagles

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles didn't take long to usher in the 2013 season in style.

In the bottom of the 1st, Ramon Laureano was hit by a pitch, then stole second.  After Emmanuel Forcier walked to set up 1st and 2nd with one out, Buddy Putnam doubled to bring Laureano home.  A hit-and-run from Blake Sydeski brought home Forcier, and then Putnam came home on a Raphael Gladu single to bring a 3-0 lead into the 2nd.

After getting 1 run in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th, the Golden Eagles blew the game open with a six-run 5th, aided by two errors that let the first two hitters on base, and a 3rd that allowed one more run to score to make the score 12-2 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles would cap things off with a five-run 8th.

On the mound, Queensbury native Ryan Davis looked good, pitching 6 innings where he struck out 11, giving up three runs, two earned, to set his ERA at 3.00 after the first game of the season.

Tonight the Golden Eagles are scheduled to travel west to face the Newark Pilots at 7:15PM, providing rain doesn't hamper their plans.  They're back at East Field tomorrow night when the league champions, the Amsterdam Mohawks, come to town for a rematch of last year's championship series.  The festivities at East Field will include a pre-game concert and a post-game fireworks show, with first pitch scheduled for 7PM.

HITTER'S PARTY
Every starter had a hit as the New York Mets rebounded nicely from their walk-off loss to the Nationals on Tuesday with a 10-1 win last night.  Juan Lagares had three hits, and Marlon Byrd and Anthony Recker were key players with three RBI's a piece.

Dillon Gee allowed 9 hits, but struck out 7 as he wins his second straight.  He allowed one run, coming in the bottom of the 1st where Ian Desmond brought Dernard Span home.

TONIGHT: No Stephen Strasburg, which will make Mets fans happy, as he was officially placed on the DL yesterday.  Instead, the Nationals elect to jump his spot in the rotation and will go with Gio Gonzalez.  Gonzalez faced the Mets back on April 20th and was rocked for 5 runs on 5 hits as he didn't make it to the 5th inning.  The Mets will try to give Shawn Marcum his first win of the season.  He was doing well through 6 innings for the Mets his last time out, but became unglued in the 7th inning, when the Marlins took the lead to snap the Mets 5 game win streak.

COMPLETE CONTROL SABATHIA
C.C. Sabathia pitched a complete game as the New York Yankees struck early in their win against the Cleveland Indians.  Sabathia pitched a 7-hitter, striking out 9 and surrendering 4 runs as he went the distance.

Travis Hafner hit his 10th home run of the year to put the Yankees on the board in the 1st inning, then Brett Gardner added three more with his 6th in the 2nd inning.

Corey Kluber was the losing pitcher for Cleveland.

Midday Recap: Parn-hell, Big Teix and a Grimm Night

Bobby Parnell blows save, Nats walk off on fly ball.

It took only 8 pitches for Bobby Parnell to blow the save last night against the Washington Nationals.  11 pitches later, Parnell was staring down the wrong end of a Nationals walk-off as Steve Lombardozzi drove in the winning run through a sac-fly to left field.

It wrecks what should have been Jeremy Hefner's 2nd win of the season.  Hefner allowed only 4 hits, as his only blemish was a solo shot from Ian Desmond in the 2nd inning.  He struck out 7 in his 7 innings pitched, and has seen his ERA improve from the high of 7.20 when he pitched in relief in Colorado and gave up two home runs, to the better looking 4.36 it sits after yesterday's game.

Omar Quintanilla continues to bat well, going 2 for 3 with a double and a triple.  Since being called up from Las Vegas, Quintanilla has batted .529, including 7 for 11 in June.  He batted in both of the Mets runs.

It was the first walkoff for the Nationals this year, who needed the win to get back at .500 on the year.  They'll try to stay above that line tonight as they send Dan Haren to the mound.  He surrendered two runs in a losing effort against the Baltimore Orioles last week, and is hoping to get his ERA below 5.00.  Dillon Gee is coming off a career-high 12 strikeouts against the Yankees last week, and would love to have a similarly satisfying game to help get his ERA under control.

BIG TEIX
Yesterday we mentioned the work Mark Teixeira did against the Cleveland Indians as he helped the Yankees get off their losing ways.  Well, last night, he did it again.

His 3-run shot in the 3rd inning helped make David Phelps a winner as the Yankees hung on for the 4-3 win.  It was a nervous moment for Yankees fans as Joba Chamberlain surrendered a homer to Drew Stubbs that pulled the Indians within one, but got out of the mess with the lead intact.

The Yankees wrap up the series with a matinee at Yankee Stadium, as C.C. Sabathia takes the mound for the 1:05PM start.  The Yankees then start a west coast swing as they start a four game series in Seattle on Thursday.

GRIMM NIGHT
Every starter for the Boston Red Sox made it on the bases as the Boston Red Sox struck early and often on their way to a 17-5 pummeling of the Texas Rangers.

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Justin Grimm only made it 5 outs before having to be yanked, having already surrendered 8 runs at that time.  The Rangers used 6 pitchers in the game, accumulating as many strike outs combined as Ryan Dempster had for the Red Sox, 6.

In all, 7 home runs were hit at Fenway, four from the bats of the Red Sox.  Mike Carp accounted for one of those homers on his way to a three-for-four game where he batted in 3 runs.  David Ortiz also drove in 3 runs as he hit a double and a triple.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
The Los Angeles Kings cut the deficit in half with their 3-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.

Justin Williams got the Kings on the board 3 minutes into the game with his 6th of the playoffs.  Slava Voynov scored in the 2nd period to give the Kings a 2-0 lead in the 2nd Period.  Just before the intermission, though, Bryan Bickell's 7th of the Playoffs trimmed the deficit, and gave Chicago some momentum heading into the 3rd Period.

But the Blackhawks were unable to solve Jonathan Quick, stopping 19 of the 20 shots he faced, and the Kings prevailed 3-1 at the Staples Center.

Game #4 is slated for Thursday night in Los Angeles.

GOLDEN RULE

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles start their 2013 campaign tonight at East Field as they host the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs.  The Golden Eagles are trying to build off last year's success where they made it to the League Championship Series before falling to the Amsterdam Mohawks.

Queensbury alum Ryan Davis is scheduled to start on the mound for the Golden Eagles this evening.

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles play in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League and are in their 10th season of play at East Field.

First Pitch is at 7PM.

BINGO!
Speaking of the Queensbury Spartans, they're heading to Binghamton this weekend.  The Spartans held on and survived a Cortland four-run 6th inning as they move onto the state semifinals in Class A with their 6-5 win.

It is the first final four appearance for the Spartans since 2003.  They will face Bayport-Blue Point this Saturday at NYSEG Field in Binghamton.

In addition to the Spartans, the Fort Ann Cardinals also will be playing in the state final four after disposing of Heuvelton 20-0.  For more about this game, read Greg Brownell's story in the Post-Star.

The baseball team will not be the only Cardinal representative in the state final four this weekend.  The Lady Cardinal softball team punched their ticket for the semifinals at the Morse Sports Complex in Queensbury after their 2-0 victory over Crown Point.  The Lady Cardinals are ranked #2 in Class D.  For a full recap and reaction, take a look at Pete Tobey's story for the Post-Star.

At the end of the first quarter, it looked like it would be a close and tight game.

By the end of the third quarter, it became apparent that LeBron James and company will play again this month as they jumped out to a 76-55 lead.  They would go on to win 99-76.

Turnovers became a big issue for the Pacers, turning the ball over 21 times, most of them coming in the first half.  And although many of those turnovers didn't equate to points for the Heat, it prevented the Pacers from keeping pace with the Heat, who started taking control of the game in the 2nd quarter

Paul George, Game 6's hero, could only muster 7 points on two-for-nine shooting before fouling out of the game.  George Hill didn't fare much better, going 1 for 7 inside the arch and 3 for 7 behind the line for a combined 4 for 14.  He finished with 13 points.  Roy Hibbert was the top player for the Pacers, scoring 18 points on 7/11 shooting, grabbing 8 rebounds.

James went 15/16 from the line on his way to 32 points for the game, and Dwayne Wade backed him up with 21 points.

After winning their fourth conference title since 2006 [Miami Herald], the Heat now advance to face the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, with Game 1 set for Thursday night, 8PM (10ABC, WTEN).  [NBA Finals Schedule]

SIX FOR SIX
It was an amazing day on the local diamonds yesterday as State Regionals were held throughout the state.  Six Section 2 teams took to the field with the hopes of making it to the state finals this weekend in Binghamton (Baseball) and Queensbury (Softball).

All 6 teams won.  We'll offer a brief recap, but if you want to know more about the games yesterday, we'll link you to the articles written by those who were there.

BASEBALL
Class A: Queensbury 12, Massena 0 - The Queensbury Spartans started quick, then blew the game open with a 6 run fifth inning as they defeated Massena to set up today's meeting with Cortland at 4PM at the Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany.  [The Post-Star's Greg Brownell Recap]

Class B: Schalmont 10, Beekmantown 3 - A four-hitter from Greg Musk propels Schalmont to the next round, where they face Ogdensburgh Free Academy at Bleecker Stadium today at 4PM.  [Daily Gazette, need log-in for full article]

SOFTBALL
Class A: Troy 6, Jamesville-DeWitt 1 - In a game that Troy Record's sportswriter Laura Amato said was "one of their most fundamentally-sound games" this season, the Troy Flying Horses made it one step closer to Queensbury with their 6-1 win over Jamesville-DeWitt.  They'll play Malone tomorrow at SUNY Potsdam. Class B: Chatham 12, Canton 0 - Chatham rolls past Canton at SUNY Plattsburgh to set up today's match with Saranac tomorrow at the SUNY Plattsburgh Fieldhouse Complex. [no recap found]

Class C: Greenwich 4, Ticonderoga 1 - The Greenwich Witches are one win away from the State Final Four after Mariah Linnett and Sarah Heimbach shut down Ticonderoga.  They'll play Wednesday against St. Lawrence at SUNY Potsdam [Pete Tobey's recap for The Post-Star]

BRUIN...
The Boston Bruins have taken away the home advantage for the Pittsburgh Penguins with a dominating 6-1 win on Monday.

Brad Marchand silenced the Pittsburgh crowd quickly as his 3rd of the playoffs came 28 seconds after the opening faceoff.  He would bookend the period, scoring the 4th Boston goal with 9 seconds left in the period to bring about a quiet 1st intermission for the Penguins.

The Bruins would tack on two more in the 3rd Period as they take a 2-0 series lead home to Boston, where Game 3 will be on Wednesday night.

TRIBED
Andy Pettitte, fresh back from being on the Disabled List, lasted only 4 2/3rd innings as the Cleveland Indians put up 3 runs in the 5th to tie their game against the New York Yankees.

But the Indians were unable to take the lead, and the bullpen shut down their batters as the Yankees would score 2 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th to beat the Indians 7-4.  Shawn Kelley would get the win for the Yankees, and Mariano Rivera would gain his 20th save of the season.

Mark Teixeira made his presence felt, hitting a grand slam in the 3rd inning to finish with four RBIs.

HARPER-LESS
The New York Mets begin a three-game series with the Washington Nations this evening.  The Mets will be trying to erase the memories from their series against the Miami Marlins.

The Nationals will be trying to keep pace with the Atlanta Braves, but will have to do so without Bryce Harper, who landed on the 15-day DL.  They also may be without Stephen Strasburg, who suffered a Grade 1 lat strain in the game against the Atlanta Braves Friday night.  He's slated to pitch Thursday opposite Shaun Marcum.

Tonight, the Mets send Jeremy Hefner, who earned his first win of the season against the Yankees last week, giving up 9 hits in six innings pitched.  Jordan Zimmerman struck out four in 5 innings pitched the last time he faced the Mets, but got rocked for 7 earned runs and 10 hits against the Baltimore Orioles his last time out.

Midday Recap: Rainy night in the Bronx, Mets swept, Tiger hates that 12th hole

It was a thunderous night at Yankee Stadium.

So miserable, they couldn't complete the game.  Three rain delays later, umpires called the Red Sox/Yankees game after 5 1/2 innings played, with Boston leading 6-0.  David Ortiz capped the Red Sox scoring with his deep right homer in the top of the 6th inning to cap a two-for-three game.

Clay Buchholz kept the Yankee bats silent as he earns his 8th win of the season.  Giving up only 2 hits, Buchholz struck out 4 in his 5 innings pitched.  Hiroki Kuroda loses his third straight, pitching 5 1/3rd innings, giving up all three runs, two to the long ball.  Kuroda's last win came May 17th in a 5-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays where he went 8 innings.

The Yankees now prepare for a three game stretch against the Cleveland Indians.

TRIPLE
The Miami Marlins put up a triple on the board in the 1st inning as they spoil any good feeling the Mets had following their sweep of the Subway Series with their 11-6 win on Sunday.  It was not the finest outing for ace Matt Harvey - giving up three in the 1st and another in the 2nd - but he walks away with the no-decision after Ike Davis tied the score with his two-run home run in the 4th inning.  Marlon Byrd contributed in the 5th inning that brought Omar Quintanilla home, then Ike again bats in a run with his single.

But the bullpen couldn't protect the lead.  In to relieve Harvey, Scott Rice allows 3 runs and 4 walks in 2/3rd innings pitched, as Marcell Ozuna cleaned up in the 6th inning with his 2-RBI double.  By contrast, the Mets couldn't get any offense against the Marlins bullpen, allowing only 3 hits in a combined 4 2/3rd innings after Kevin Slowey gave up 6 runs in his 4 1/3rd innings pitched.

The Mets are off Monday as they prepare for a three game series against the Washington Nationals, who could be seeing some injury trouble with Bryce Harper heading to the disabled list, and there are questions whether Stephen Strasburg will be able to pitch Thursday after a Grade 1 lat strain caused him to come out early in his Friday game against the Atlanta Braves.

JON SLOW
Jonathan Quick wasn't quick enough Sunday, as the Chicago Blackhawks will travel to Los Angeles holding a 2-0 series lead after their 4-2 win.  Quick allowed 4 goals on 17 shots, before being yanked midway through the game for Jonathan Bernier, who stopped all 9 shots he faced.

It was a team effort for the Chicago Blackhawks, who saw goals from Andrew Shaw, Brent Seabrook, Bryan Bickell and Michal Handzus.  Patrick Sharp and Brandon Saad both had two assists.

Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli scored the goals for the Kings.

Game 3 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

GAME SEVEN
The finest pairing of words in sports come alive tonight as the Miami Heat host the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals.  The Pacers extinguished the Heat thanks to a 29-15 3rd Quarter en route to a home 91-77 win in Game 6 on Saturday.

LeBron James was a major contributor for the Heat on Saturday, scoring 29 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.  Paul George is making a name for himself for the Indiana Pacers, scoring 28 points and bringing in 8 rebounds as he shot nearly 58% from the field.

BACK TIGER
Tiger Woods is not a big fan of the Muirfield Village Golf Course back nine after his performance in the Memorial Tournament this weekend.  On Thursday, Woods escaped the back nine at even-par, but there were signs of trouble as he bogeyed the 12th, the 15th and the 18th holes to erase prior hole birdies.  Then on Friday, a bogey on the 13th and a double-bogey on the 15th pushed him to two-over-par.

The wheels came off on Saturday as Woods double-bogeyed the 12th and 15th holes.  A bogey on the 17th and a triple-bogey on the 18th hole put him at +9.  Three birdies early in the front nine put him back at +6, however two bogeys on the 6th and 9th holes would finish him at +8, several shots from the lead.

Woods would triple-bogey his final attempt on the 12th hole on Sunday, earning him a +6 for that hole alone as he finished at +8, 20 shots from the tournament winner, Matt Kuchar.

Mets fall against the Miami Marlins.

What was an emotional high of 5 straight, including 4 against the New York Yankees, has turned sour.

The Mets fell to the Miami Marlins 11-6 on Sunday as the Marlins sweep an opponent for the first time all season.  The Mets are 3-6 against the Marlins, who are 10-38 against all other opponents.

Matt Harvey got rocked for three runs in the 1st, and fell behind 4-1 before the Mets came back with a run in the 3rd, 2 runs in the 4th to tie, and 2 in the 5th to give him a 6-4 lead when he left the mound.

But against Scott Rice gave up 3 runs in the 6th as the Marlins took the lead for good.

Mets falter in the 7th

Off the highs of the Mets series against the New York Yankees, they traveled to Miami to face the Marlins.

Shaun Marcum, who dazzled before a national audience on Sunday, looked to do the same through 6 innings, getting out of a jam in the 5th inning when he got Jeff Mathis to ground into a double play with the bases loaded. 

But the 7th inning proved too much for Marcum. 

Derek Dietrich led off the inning with a double, and was able to move to 3rd on Marcell Ozuna's single.  After Chris Coghlan struck out, Ed Lucas broke a scoreless tie with a single to right, scoring Dietrich.  A Jeff Mathis sac-fly brought home Ozuna, then Jordan Brown chased Marcum from the game with his two-RBI double.

The damage was done, as the Mets left the inning 4-0, and would lose to the Miami Marlins 5-1 to end both the Mets five-game win streak and the Marlins nine-game losing skid.

The Mets failed to figure out Jacob Turner, who made his season debut after playing with New Orleans to start off the 2013 season.  Turner pitched 7 innings, striking out 3 and giving up 5 hits.
