Sectionals: Boys Basketball

It's a busy time of the year for Winter High School Sports.

Basketball Sectionals get under way tonight, and so too does the Semifinal round of the Section II Division I Boys Hockey tournament.

The big marquee matchup will be the Adirondack League title matchup tonight when the Lake George Warriors and the Argyle Scots meet up on the court at SUNY Adirondack at 7:30pm.  Joey Lufkin and Joel Wincowski have both been lighting it up for their respective clubs all season long.

In their first meeting of the year, Wincowski was held to 26 points, whereas Lufkin scored 47 as the Scots gave the Warriors their first and only loss of the season.  It was the closest game both teams have had all season long.

In Class A, the Glens Falls Indians get a first round bye as the #3 seed.  They'll face the winner of the Bishop Gibbons/Averill Park game next Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College in the Quarterfinals.  South Glens Falls also gets a first round bye, and will face Lansingburgh in the earlier game at HVCC.  Queensbury will host Amsterdam in the first round, with a 7PM start on Wednesday night.  The winner of that game will have to face the #2 seed, Burnt Hills on Sunday.  The overall seed is Scotia, who ran the table in the Foothills Council and looked tough in all their conference encounters.

Meanwhile, 18 teams will be merged down to 16 in Class B with two games on the docket today.  Tamarac travels to Greenville and Granville travels over the hills and mountains to play Corinth.  Tamarac and Greenville are fighting for the right to play Watervliet, the disputed #1 seed in the class after they had to vacate some wins earlier in the season due to a player on their roster not living in the school district's boundaries.  Locally, Hudson Falls gets a 14-seed, and will have to travel to Mekeel Christian in Scotia.  And Schuylerville is the 2-seed, and will host the winner of the Granville/Corinth game on Tuesday.

19 becomes 16 in Class C with three games today.  Hadley-Luzurne will face Mayfield tonight at 7PM as they hope to make the trek to Greenwich in the Sweet 16 on Tuesday.  Cambridge travels to Spa Catholic tomorrow for the right to play #2 seed Lake George on Tuesday.  Hoosic Valley out of the Warsaren league is the #1 seed in the class.  Their resume includes two losses, both against Class B's Schuylerville, and a narrow win against Class B Tamarac.  They could look vulnerable, with close wins against #3 seed Greenwich both at home and away.

In Class D, all eyes are on the Argyle Scots, who may have the best shot of any local team of making it back to the Civic Center in Mid-March.  But Loudonville Christian may have something to say about that.  They're 17-1, Ranked #5 in the state in Class D, with their only loss being a 46-40 decision against Schroon Lake, an undefeated team out of Section VII that is currently ranked #3 in the state.

We're keeping an eye on all the games, and are looking to see who may make it to the Glens Falls Civic Center for the Semifinals and Finals coming up in two weeks.

Don't Forget: 1230 FOX Sports Radio will be bringing you the Section II Division II Championship game in Ice Hockey this Wednesday as the Glens Falls Indians and Queensbury Spartans meet up for the first time since the Stick Game in January.  Coverage begins at 5:15PM for the 5:30PM Faceoff at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
