WHITEHALL - One team had to experience their first loss of the season in the rain at Ambrose Gilligan Field on Saturday.
That team turned out to be the Cambridge Indians, who fumbled their way to a 21-19 loss against the Whitehall Railroaders to fall a game behind Whitehall for the top spot in Class D.
While the win gives Whitehall the edge in the playoff chase, it ultimately doesn't matter, as with Canajoharie's win over the Fort Edward/Argyle Flying Forts, it settled which four teams would be playing come November 1st at Schuylerville High.
Whitehall, Cambridge, Rensselaer and Canajoharie will make up the field for the Class D Sectional, with Fort Edward and Warrensburg playing in Week 7 to see which team will win their first game of the season.
It was a game that Whitehall got comfortable playing early, though we didn't see the magic that either team was known for through the first four weeks of the season. With the rain, it made the passing game nearly extinct.
We didn't get to see Ethan English at his finest. We didn't get to see Justin Hoagland at his finest. Which is a shame, because on the top of their game, both quarterbacks would have electrified their offenses with their ability to both run and pass.
But maybe that makes this the appetizer for what could be another meeting between these teams on Saturday, November 8th in the Sectional Championship at Schuylerville.
Let's just hope for a dry day then.
The weather not only impacted the play on the field, it impacted our broadcast. We were inside the press box, protected by the elements, however, thanks to a surprisingly good crowd that came out in support despite the rain, the elements made things hard for us.
The press box at Ambrose Gilligan Field is on even level with the top level of the bleachers, requiring us on several occasions to peek around supporters whose umbrellas were blocking our view. If it wasn't for Tim Drawbridge or The Post-Star's Pete Tobey, I'm not sure how we would have made it through the broadcast with as much accuracy as we did.
We can write it off as just another challenge we have faced in our 33rd football broadcast in the last three years we've been doing this.

Cambridge Fumbles Control of Class D
WHITEHALL - The Cambridge/Salem Indians lost four fumbles and threw for two interceptions as they fell to the Whitehall Railroaders 21-19 at a rainy Ambrose Gilligan Field in Whitehall.
The loss, their first of the season, drops them to 4-1 on the season, and gives Whitehall control of their own destiny in Class D with two weeks left to play in the regular season. The Railroaders, now 5-0, face Hoosic Valley next week and Renssealer to finish the season.
Whitehall took control early when Brad Hanna found the end zone from 3 yards out, then tacked on two more when he was bounced the snap on the fake to give the Railroaders the 8-0 lead. Cambridge would then be forced to punt late in the quarter, when Cody LaRock returned a blocked punt for the score to make it 14-0.
Cambridge was able to find the end zone in the second quarter, when Chris Warnke ran it in from 38 yards out. However, they failed the two-point conversion to trail 14-6 at the half.
Both teams suffered turnovers in the third quarter, when Justin Hoagland fumbled the kickoff trying to stretch out his return. But Cambridge's gift turned into nothing after they fumbled the ball back to the Whitehall Railroaders. Justin Hoagland then made up for his earlier mistake as he made it to the far sideline and beat the defense to extend Whitehall's lead.
On the ensuing drive, Cambridge answered with Caleb Rowland's 34 yard touchdown run, but still was down by two possessions when their conversion try failed on a botched snap.
That would become critical as Cambridge drove the field to end the third quarter, and found success on the first play of the fourth quarter as Ethan English connected with Todd Gorman for the 5 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good, and the Whitehall lead was down to 2.
The rest of the game saw Cambridge try to drive for the go-ahead score, but failed to convert. When passing became critical for Ethan English, he turned it over twice, first by Brian McLaughlin and then by Justin Hoagland, allowing the Railroaders to knee it at the end to finish off the victory.

2014 High School Football Schedule Unveiled

FOX Sports Radio 1230 will be producing and broadcasting ten regular season High School Football games during the upcoming 2014 season. The season begins on Saturday, September 6th when the NYSPHSAA Class A defending champions, the Queensbury Spartans, host the Niskyauna Silver Warriors.

In the third year of airing high school sports, FOX Sports Radio 1230, WMML, announces that they will produce and air ten regular season High School Football games this fall.
The broadcasts begin Saturday, September 6th when the defending Class A State Champion Queensbury Spartans take on the Niskayuna Silver Warriors in a non-conference game at Queensbury High School. It will be the first time at home for the Spartans since winning the title last November at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
Fort Edward's first home as a combined squad with the Argyle Scots will be featured the following week when they host the Hoosic Valley Indians. In Week 3, the Hudson Falls Tigers host the Ichabod Crane Riders in Ichabod Crane's second ever trip to the Washington County school. Last year Ichabod Crane lost a Week 9 Crossover game 40-12.
Week 4 features the first of three playoff rematches, as the Cohoes Tigers travel up to play the Glens Falls Indians at Putt LeMay Field. The Tigers last year eliminated the Glens Falls Indians 42-19 before getting eliminated themselves against Broadalbin-Perth in the Semifinals.
Friday Night Lights begins on FOX Sports Radio 1230 in Week 5 when the Hudson Falls Tigers play the Glens Falls Indians in the Jug Game on Friday, October 3rd. It will be the first year of the cross-river rivalry on FOX Sports Radio 1230, with Glens Falls winning last year's edition in late theatrics to continue their strong grip on the jug.
On Saturday, October 4th, the combined squads from Cambridge and Salem will travel up to the northern reaches of Section 2 when they play a Saturday afternoon game against the Whitehall Railroaders in another game that is a rematch of a playoff game last year. Last year the Cambridge Indians disposed of the Railroaders in the Quarterfinals on their way to a Sectional Championship before losing to Moriah in the State Regionals.
The second Friday Night Lights game will be in Week 6 when Chatham Panthers travel up north to face the new combined team from Lake George and Hadley/Luzurne. The following day will be homecoming at South Glens Falls, as the Bulldogs host the Queensbury Spartans in an afternoon game at South High.
The second Friday Night Lights game is on Friday, October 10th, and features local teams Queensbury and South Glens Falls. Originally scheduled for October 11th, the two teams will play under the lights at South High in their Homecoming Game. The following day, Warrensburg will be on the air for the first of two straight Saturdays when they travel to Cambridge.
The regular season wraps up with a rematch of last year's Super Bowl, with the Queensbury Spartans and the Burnt Hills Spartans playing at Union College in Schenectady on Friday, October 17th. Last year the Queensbury Spartans were on the verge of falling to Burnt Hills in the Super Bowl when Kody Bruno ran in for a 21 yard touchdown with less than 90 seconds left to play to give Queensbury the lead for good.
On Saturday, October 18th, the final regular season game will feature the Fort Edward/Argyle squad traveling over to the Southern Adirondacks to face the Warrensburg Burghers.
The 10 game schedule does not include any playoff games, as they will be determined based on local teams and will be announced prior to the end of the regular season.
All broadcasts will begin 15 minutes prior to kickoff with the "FOX Sports Radio 1230 Warmup" pregame show, featuring game previews and coach interviews.

High School Recap: Barnes breaks down the barn door on way to four TD's
The win gives the Witches sole possession of first place in Class D North.
The Witches scored on their first two possessions of the game as John Barnes rushed his way in from four yards out for a score, and Lukas Whitehouse connected with Alex Messina for a six yard score, as the Witches led 12-0 after the first quarter.
But Justin Hoagland helped get the Railroaders back within a possession with his three yard run to score early in the second quarter.
John Barnes would score one last time on a 71 yard rush that made the score 35-7. The run, with 52 seconds left to play in the third quarter, pushed Barnes past the 1,000 yard mark for the season.
The Witches would cap the scoring on a Lukas Whitehouse to Glenn Taylor five yard touchdown pass that would make the score 42-7.
The Railroaders fall to 3-2 with the loss, suffering their first divisional loss this season. The loss places them second in the Northern Division with two games still to play. Justin Hoagland threw for 39 yards, but found trouble as he completed only three of his 10 passes, getting picked off twice in the second half.
On the ground, Hoagland scored a touchdown on his way to 139 yards of rushing. Brad Hanna rushed for 58 yards.
Lukas Whitehouse passed for 64 yards on 5-for-10 passing. He threw two touchdowns and was picked off once. John Barnes finished with 222 yards and four touchdowns. He also had 28 receiving yards. Brandon DiSanto also crossed the century mark, with 100 yards of rushing.
The Witches now travel to Warrensburg to face the Burghers before wrapping up their regular season at home against the Fort Edward Flying Forts. The Railroaders will return home to face Salem next week.

BONUS COVERAGE: Whitehall @ Greenwich

1230 FOX Sports Radio is adding one game to their 2013 High School Football Coverage.
We will be live at Greenwich Central School as the Greenwich Witches face the Whitehall Railroaders in a Class D match.
The match features John Barnes, who has made headlines because of his ability to run through defensive lines, leading to his Section II leading 801 yards through four games. He's on pace to crack the all-time Top 25 in rushing yards for Section II. For Whitehall, Justin Hoagland has shown he can rush and pass, but distribute the ball too as Brad Hanna has been picking up some good yardage for the Railroaders.
With both teams at 3-1, 2-0 in the division, the winner of the contest will have the upper path towards the Northern Division's #1 seed come the first round of Sectionals in Week 8.
Broadcast will begin on 1230 FOX Sports Radio at 6:45PM with the pregame, featuring comments from both head coaches. Kickoff is scheduled for 7PM.

WMML/WENU 2013 High School Sports Schedule
A minimum of 6 local high school contests will be featured on 1230 FOX Sports Radio over the course of the fall High School Football season.
In the 2nd year of broadcasting local high school sports, the two sports stations will broadcast 6 regular season games, with a 7th to be determined at the end of September. The slate of games includes coverage of almost every school in the tri-county area, including Glens Falls, Queensbury, Hudson Falls, Lake George, South Glens Falls and more.
Coverage of each game begins 15 minutes prior to kick-off with a pregame show that includes game previews, coach interview and more. In-game coverage will also include Twitter and Facebook updates, as well as real-time updates via MaxPreps's Quixcore tool.
The broadcast team will regularly be made up of John Lawrence and Rick Harrington. The two teamed up last year to broadcast several games in the area, including the championship game when the Glens Falls Indians met up with eventual Class B champs Maine-Endwell at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
A game featuring two semifinalists in the Class A Sectionals last year will lead off the coverage as the Troy Flying Horses take on the Queensbury Spartans at Queensbury High School on Saturday, September 7th. Other games on the schedule include a rematch of last year's Salem/Warrensburg game where the Burghers scored the game-winning touchdown with less than 30 seconds left to beat the Salem Generals, as well as the 2013 Jug Game between the Hudson Falls Tigers and the Glens Falls Indians.
The 7th week, which is the final game of the regular season, is reserved as a "Flex Week", as a determination of that game will be based on playoff implications and should be announced at the end of September. In addition, more games could be added through the season.
Update: We have learned that the Lake George/Whitehall game is a Saturday afternoon game, therefore the schedule has been updated to reflect the time change. The time change will now allow us to air the game on 1230 FOX Sports Radio instead of 1410 CBS Sports.
