Yu Darvish comes close for a 2nd time. Two mis-fields by Daniel Murphy and an errant throw leads to the Dodgers 6th straight win. And Mariano Rivera takes a day off after blowing three straight save chances.
But the big story this morning is the unfortunate death of a "lifelong Braves fan". According to authorities, Ronald Homer Jr., fell 65' to his death during the Atlanta Braves game with the Philadelphia Phillies last night. In an interview with the Associated Press, his mother said her son was a fan of the team through their bad days and their good days.
Police say the deadly fall appears to be an accident, and that there's no sign of foul play. There's no word at this time how Homer fell to his death. An autopsy will take place today.
DAZZLING DARVISH
If Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish wasn't already in the discussion for AL Cy Young candidates, he helped his case yesterday, striking out 15 against the Houston Astros over the course of 8 innings. If that wasn't enough, Darvish for the second time this season, flirted with a no-no against these Astros.
The one hit he did allow came against Carlos Corporan, who homered with one man out in the 8th inning. Joe Nathan came in the 9th inning to save Darvish's effort.
Darvish is 12-5 on the season, with a 2.64 ERA that ranks 4th in the American League. His 207 strikeouts is tops in the Majors, 29 better than Matt Harvey and Seattle's Felix Hernandez, who are tied with 178. The .184 batting average hitters have against Darvish is 2nd to NL Cy Young candidate Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Back in April, Darvish came one out away from a Perfect Game in his first start when Marwin Gonzalez singled up the middle for the lone Astros base runner.
MISS MURPHY
Things were going fine for Jenrry Mejia for 5 innings. He sat the first 8 batters he faced, and allowed only 3 singles through those 5 innings. Plus thanks to 4 straight singles in the 2nd, he had a 2-0 cushion to work with.
Then came the 6th inning. The Dodgers began the inning with two singles that were both misfielded by Daniel Murphy, one on a grounder that he couldn't get control of in time to throw out Carl Crawford and then only got a piece of a liner to right field from Mark Ellis. As both weren't outright errors, they were registered as base hits, allowing the Dodgers to set up 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Adrian Gonzalez singled to center, bringing Crawford home, but then an errant throw from Juan Lagares to Wilmer Flores allowed the Dodgers to tie the game.
A Yasiel Puig sacrifice fly would bring Gonzalez home as the Dodgers took the lead and never looked back, winning the game 4-2.
Killer 40 Minute Span: In about 40 minutes, the Mets went from looking good against the league's hottest team to being another victim. After falling behind 3-2, the Mets had a sparkling opportunity in the 7th inning when Eric Young singled to load the bases with 1 man out. But two very questionable calls against Juan Lagares would help Ronald Belisario and subsequent reliever Paco Rodriquez get out of the mess.
On a 2-0 count, Lagares checked his swing, but according to 1st Base umpire Jeff Kellogg, he went enough around for the strike. After three straight fouls, Lagares finally got the 3rd ball, putting the count full. The 8th and final pitch of the at bat appeared on camera to be outside, but Home Plate Umpire Chad Fairchild called strike three for the 2nd out.
Daniel Murphy was able to hit the ball deep, but Yasiel Puig's speed allowed him to get to the warning track in time to catch and end the Mets threat, leaving three on the bases.
The Mets had another threat in the 8th inning with runners on 1st and 2nd with two men out, but Justin Turner would strand them as he was called out on strikes.
In the 9th, Josh Satin hit the ball fairly deep, but a running Jerry Hairston would reach in time for the 1st out. After two strikeouts, Kenley Jansen would earn the four-strike save for the Dodgers.
MISSING A NIGHT
Hiroki Kuroda went 8 innings, striking out 7 as the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1, but the big discussion was the lack of Mariano Rivera in the game.
After blowing 3 straight saves, Rivera opted to take the night off, resulting in David Robertson earning his first save of the year for the Yankees. Rivera's night off didn't sit well for Yankees fans, who in the 9th inning were chanting for his appearance in the game, especially after Boon Logan allowed a single on his second offering to J.B. Shuck to open the 9th, then Robertson walked Mike Trout and gave up a double to Josh Hamilton to set up runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out with only a 1 run lead.
But Roberston calmed down with the bases loaded, and got both Mark Trumbo and Chris Nelson to strike out to end the game.
Mariano Rivera told reporters after the game that this simply was a day off and not a forced sitting after blowing three save opportunities in a row, and that he will be back during this four game series against the Angels.

Midday Recap: Shell Shocked
Yasiel Puig is back in the headlines. We survive our first trip to the Spa. A Hoosier wins the Brickyard 400. The Mets get whalloped in D.C., and Derek Jeter makes his triumphant return to the Yankees for the 2nd time.
But the big story this weekend is the decision of Hunter Mahan. This story is making headlines everywhere as Mahan drops out of the Canadian Open to be by his wife's side as she goes into labor. As the golfer was on the driving tee getting ready to make his third round, he received the phone call that his wife was in labor. He immediately withdrew from the tournament, and was on the first flight to Dallas.
There's a unique twist to this story - Mahan was the tournament leader at the time he got the phone call. His withdrawal allowed Brandt Snedeker to become the tournament winner, who announced during his press conference that baby Zoey will be getting a special gift.
ONE WAY TO BREAK A TIE
It was a pitcher's duel in Los Angeles on Sunday, ending with Yasiel Puig's show to left field that cleared the wall in the bottom of the 11th inning for the 1-0 win. Tony Cingrani kept the Dodgers off the bases, except for one walk and a hit by opposing pitcher Chris Capuano. Capuano gave up all three hits the Reds were able to get on Sunday.
The homer was Puig's 10th of the season and gives the Dodgers a 2 1/2 game lead in the National League West.
SHELL SHOCKED
Entering Friday's night game, the Mets had the opportunity to pull 1/2 game behind the Philadelphia Phillies for 2nd in the NL East. But Ryan Zimmerman's walk-off homer gave the Nationals momentum, which in turn deflated the Mets, who now have lost three straight after the Nationals rocked Carlos Torres for 8 runs in 3 innings on the way to a 14-1 loss.
After yesterday, the Mets are now 1 1/2 games behind the Phillies and are 4 games back of 2nd place Washington. It doesn't get any easier for the Mets as they travel to Miami to face the Marlins, a team who the Mets are 3-8 against this season, including losing their last five against the fish.
The Mets send Jeremy Hefner on the mound. Hefner is trying to return to his pre-break form after pitching two duds. Unfortunately, Hefner is 0-2 against the Marlins this season, but those two losses were fine pitching performances that became losses due to lack of run support. The Marlins send Jacob Turner, who debuted against the Mets on May 31st, going 7 innings without allowing a run.

It didn't take long for Derek Jeter to get the crowd excited on Sunday. In his first plate appearance after returning from his latest stint on the DL, Jeter homered to give the Yankees the lead. After a three-run first, Tampa Bay answered with 1 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd for the 4-3 lead. Alfonso Soriano would put the Yankees back on top with his 18th homer of the year. But Wil Myers would even things up in the top of the 5th.
The score would remain tied until the bottom of the 9th, when with two men on, Soriano singled home Brett Gardiner for the walk-off victory.
The Yankees win prevents the Tampa Bay Rays from sweeping the series, and coupled with the Boston Red Sox win against the Orioles, moved the Rays back to 2nd place in the AL East.
HITTING THE GAS
Ryan Newman wins the race in his own backyard, winning the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis. Newman, who won the pole in record time on Saturday, took advantage of a fast final pit in order to keep Jimmie Johnson at bay. Johnson was vying to join Michael Schumacher as the only five-time winners at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Newman's win ends a 49-race drought.
HITTING THE BRAKES
Macaroon secured the lead and ran off in the backstretch in the 2nd race at Saratoga Race Course, but found herself running out of gas as the field made their way around the far turn. As she hit the brakes, it forced Illapa to do the same with nowhere to go.
Miss Frost emerged as the winner, upsetting the field at 13-1.
Miss Lamour in the 3rd race hit the gas, running away from the field to lead by 10 lengths at the half-mile pole, but kept some in reserve as she held to win.
That was just a couple of the highlights on a day which 49,000+ braved the intermittent rain showers to grab their free T-Shirts and enjoy a day at the Spa. Two upsets, with Meeker Avenue in the 7th and Dissension in the 8th, fuels a $330,000 carryover into today's races.
Forty Tales likely cements his place on the Travers day card with a win the Amsterdam. Forty Tales held back, then started passing horses left and right in the stretch, catching Mico Margarita just steps before the finish line. Joel Rosario was on board the winner, winning for trainer Todd Pletcher.
Forty Tales should be making his next appearance in the 7 furlong Grade I Kings Bishop, part of the Travers card on Saturday, August 24th.

Midday Recap 6/28: Mets, NBA, Dodgers & More
Marlon Byrd's two-run homer lifts the Mets to a Rocky Mountain Victory. Aaron Hernadez awaits trial, denied bail. The Los Angeles Dodgers are winners of 6 straight. And Anthony Bennett is your NBA #1 Draft Pick.
But the big story today is the trade that went down while the GM's were selecting new talent. Rumors were speculating before the draft began, but became publicized towards the end of the evening, as the Brooklyn Nets acquire the remaining two pieces of Boston's original big three.
Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett will call the Barclays Center their new home come November in a deal that is still being ironed out, and won't be official until July 10th. This comes just days after it was announced Doc Rivers would be taking his coaching talents to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Meanwhile the NBA Draft had several twists and turns, no bigger than Nerlens Noel falling to the 6th pick, originally selected by the New Orleans Pelicans before trading his contract off to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for all-star Jrue Holiday.
Anthony Bennett was the 1st overall pick, selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bennett is the first Canadian player to be selected 1st overall, having spent a year at UNLV.
Over in Colorado, the Mets and Rockies were making a game that was snowed-out in April. Playing in 70 degree warmer weather, the Rockies jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to Todd Helton's sac-fly and then Wilin Rosario, who was given the gift of a Josh Satin throwing error.
The Mets would get one back in the 5th inning when Zack Lutz scored when Jeremy Hefner grounded into a fielder's choice.
Then in the 8th inning, Daniel Murphy singled and then Marlon Byrd homered to left field to drive in two runs to give the Mets the lead. Scott Rice and Bobby Parnell were able to keep the Rockies off the board in the 8th and 9th innings for the win.
The Mets have won 7 of 11 during this roadtrip, and return to Citi Field to begin a three game series against the Washington Nationals. Matt Harvey is due up on the mound today, with Dillon Gee and Zack Wheeler to follow.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers have won 6 in a row to put themselves back in the race for the NL West. At the start of their June 22nd game against the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers were 9 1/2 games back. Following yesterday's 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, they are now within 6 of the division-leading Arizona Cardinals.
Much of their comeback can be attributed to rookie sensation Yasiel Puig. Since being called up to the majors, Puig has hit .427 in 23 games, including 7 homers. He has accounted for 16 runs coming home, including two of them yesterday when he took a two-out two-strike pitch to left field for a single to put the Dodgers in the lead.
