Sectionals: Girls Basketball

GIRLS BASKETBALL

A busy week of Girls Basketball games begins later this week as teams fight their way to make it to Hudson Valley Community College first for the Sectional title, then later on back to HVCC for the State Title.

In Class A, the South Glens Falls Bulldogs get the distinction of playing in the lone Opening Round game as they host the #9 seeded Amsterdam Rugged Rams this Wednesday with the hopes of advancing to play the #1 seed Troy on Saturday.

The Bulldogs are one of four Foothills Council Class A teams to make it to Sectionals.  Council-winning Queensbury gets the #4 seed, and will travel to Troy to play Mohonasen in the first of the 1/8 and 4/5 doubleheader at Troy High this Saturday night.  The Glens Falls Indians are the #6 seed, and will head to Holy Names to face #3 seed Averill Park in the first game there on Saturday, with Holy Names then hosting #7 seed Scotia.

Fellow Foothills Council team the Hudson Falls Tigers (#6 seed) will get to host a game in the Class B first round, as they face #11 seed Hudson on Wednesday.  Johnstown (#7) and Broadalbin-Perth (#9) also earned a berth into the tournament. Schuylerville made it into the Round of 16 after their play-in win against Emma Williard, but will have a tough match on Tuesday as they travel down the Hudson River to face #1 seed Watervliet.  Corinth also had to play their way into the Round of 16 after their 42-39 win over Leadership, and will travel to #2 seed Tamarac on Wednesday.

In Class C, Lake George (#9) and Greenwich (#11) make up the local teams playing in the Round of 16.  The bracket is led by the #1 seed Hoosic Valley, who has looked good all season long, losing only one game by one point against Class A's Scotia.  Both local teams will have to hit the road for their 1st round game, as Lake George makes the long trek to Fort Plain (#8) in Montgomery County on Tuesday night.  Greenwich's trek is easier, as they will travel to Waterford (#6) for their game on Tuesday.  Hoosick Falls, a team we covered when they lost to Class A's Glens Falls in December, gets the #4 seed and hosts Voorheesville on Tuesday.

Even before winning the Adirondack League Title, the Fort Edward girls earned the respect of the Section II seeding committee and gained the #1 seed in Class D.  The Flying Forts have run the table, including a narrow 1 point victory over Argyle back in December.  They'll face the winner of Germantown/North Warren this Friday at Fort Edward High.  Warrensburg (#4) also will be playing at Fort Edward this Friday, as they play #5 seeded Northville.  Fort Ann is the #2 seed, and will play host to the Quarterfinals round of the lower bracket when they play the winner of the Hartford/New Lebanon 7/10 match this Friday.  And Argyle (#3) wraps up the local contingent playing in sectionals, as they play the winner of Bolton/Heatly on Friday.

Like with the boys, we're keeping up with the girls brackets as it's possible we will be broadcasting one of the semifinals next week. Be sure to listen this Wednesday when we bring you the Section II Division II final in Boys Hockey (5:30pm) to find out where we'll be next week!

Sectionals: Boys Basketball

It's a busy time of the year for Winter High School Sports.

Basketball Sectionals get under way tonight, and so too does the Semifinal round of the Section II Division I Boys Hockey tournament.

The big marquee matchup will be the Adirondack League title matchup tonight when the Lake George Warriors and the Argyle Scots meet up on the court at SUNY Adirondack at 7:30pm.  Joey Lufkin and Joel Wincowski have both been lighting it up for their respective clubs all season long.

In their first meeting of the year, Wincowski was held to 26 points, whereas Lufkin scored 47 as the Scots gave the Warriors their first and only loss of the season.  It was the closest game both teams have had all season long.

In Class A, the Glens Falls Indians get a first round bye as the #3 seed.  They'll face the winner of the Bishop Gibbons/Averill Park game next Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College in the Quarterfinals.  South Glens Falls also gets a first round bye, and will face Lansingburgh in the earlier game at HVCC.  Queensbury will host Amsterdam in the first round, with a 7PM start on Wednesday night.  The winner of that game will have to face the #2 seed, Burnt Hills on Sunday.  The overall seed is Scotia, who ran the table in the Foothills Council and looked tough in all their conference encounters.

Meanwhile, 18 teams will be merged down to 16 in Class B with two games on the docket today.  Tamarac travels to Greenville and Granville travels over the hills and mountains to play Corinth.  Tamarac and Greenville are fighting for the right to play Watervliet, the disputed #1 seed in the class after they had to vacate some wins earlier in the season due to a player on their roster not living in the school district's boundaries.  Locally, Hudson Falls gets a 14-seed, and will have to travel to Mekeel Christian in Scotia.  And Schuylerville is the 2-seed, and will host the winner of the Granville/Corinth game on Tuesday.

19 becomes 16 in Class C with three games today.  Hadley-Luzurne will face Mayfield tonight at 7PM as they hope to make the trek to Greenwich in the Sweet 16 on Tuesday.  Cambridge travels to Spa Catholic tomorrow for the right to play #2 seed Lake George on Tuesday.  Hoosic Valley out of the Warsaren league is the #1 seed in the class.  Their resume includes two losses, both against Class B's Schuylerville, and a narrow win against Class B Tamarac.  They could look vulnerable, with close wins against #3 seed Greenwich both at home and away.

In Class D, all eyes are on the Argyle Scots, who may have the best shot of any local team of making it back to the Civic Center in Mid-March.  But Loudonville Christian may have something to say about that.  They're 17-1, Ranked #5 in the state in Class D, with their only loss being a 46-40 decision against Schroon Lake, an undefeated team out of Section VII that is currently ranked #3 in the state.

We're keeping an eye on all the games, and are looking to see who may make it to the Glens Falls Civic Center for the Semifinals and Finals coming up in two weeks.

Don't Forget: 1230 FOX Sports Radio will be bringing you the Section II Division II Championship game in Ice Hockey this Wednesday as the Glens Falls Indians and Queensbury Spartans meet up for the first time since the Stick Game in January.  Coverage begins at 5:15PM for the 5:30PM Faceoff at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
