If you remember last year, we did a thing on this blog called the Daily Recap. This Roundtable continues the concept - going around from league to league, local to national, and telling you what's going on in the sports world that caught our attention here in the studio.
The Thursday edition, which recaps the news from Wednesday, appears after the jump.
PENULTIMATE WEEKEND
The Adirondack Phantoms begin to conclude their stay in Glens Falls with two games on the road and their penultimate game at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Sunday when they host the Utica Comets.
The team, which will be moving to Allentown, PA at the end of the season, earned 5 out of 6 possible points this past weekend. Jason Akeson became the all-time single-season point scorer en route to being the third Adirondack Phantom to net two hat tricks.
The weekend begins at Worcester, where they face the Sharks at the DCU Center, then head south to face the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before heading home for the Sunday home game against Utica.
Sunday's home game is at 5PM.
NOT YOUR TYPICAL HOCKEY GAME
When the puck dropped at 8:30pm to start Tuesday's Columbus/Dallas game, the Blue Jackets already had a 1-0 lead.
That's because of a quirk in the NHL rules that states a suspended game must be started from the beginning. You see, these two teams started to play each other on March 10th, before Rich Peverley underwent a cardiac event right on the bench, forcing the suspension of the game that was 6:23 old.
Columbus took their 1-0 lead and doubled it 93 seconds into the restarted match with Artem Anisimov's 22nd of the season, and would go on to win 3-1 to secure themselves a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
By the way, Nathan Horton was allowed to keep his goal, which was credited as an empty-netter at 0:00 of the 1st Period. Both skaters that assisted him in the original goal still get to keep their assists, as well. Out with injury, Horton did not play in the resumed game.
NO HAMILTON FOR TWO MONTHS
The Mets catch a break when they head to Los Angeles to face the Angels this weekend as Josh Hamilton will not be able to play.
The 2010 MVP suffered a torn ligament in his thumb on Tuesday when he tried to beat the throw on an infield hit in the 7th inning by sliding. X-Rays came back negative, however, an MRI on Wednesday showed the complete tear.
Hamilton is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
IS THERE ANYBODY LISTENING?
The Houston Astros layed a goose egg.
According to Nielsen, Monday's broadcast of the Houston Astros/Los Angeles Angels registered a 0.0 rating.
While some of this could be blamed on the performance of the Houston Astros of late, Monday's game was scheduled opposite the rescheduled rained-out NASCAR race at Texas Motor Speedway. In addition, Comcast SportsNet Houston has limited saturation - only 10% of the Houston Metro population gets CSN Houston - keeping people who may want to see the Astros from actually seeing them play.
PRESEASON
No real surprises on the preseason schedules that were released by the National Football League yesterday.
As we already knew, the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills will play in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio on August 3rd. In fact, that will be the only time local teams get national television prior to the regular season, as the Jets and the Patriots will be kept from the main four.
