Congratulations to the Union Dutchmen, 2014 NCAA Men's Hockey Division 1 Champions. They turned some heads when they dazzled their way to their win over Boston College on Thursday, then muscled their way to an impressive 7-4 victory over Minnesota to claim their first title in school history.
Union's championship isn't the first the Capital Region has seen - RPI won the title twice, once in 1954 and again in 1985 - but still impressive considering their enrollment compared to the likes of Minnesota and Boston College.
Shayne Gostisbehere is the only drafted player on the Union squad, drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers. No word at this time whether or not he is going to forego his senior year and join the Flyers, but according to Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Flyers will not be pressuring him or influencing his decision.
BOMBS AWAY
It wasn't Bartolo Colón's day. After coaxing a ground out from Angels lead-off hitter J.B. Schuck, things got a little troubling for the Mets starting pitcher.
Mike Trout homered. Albert Pujols crushed one to center field. And Raul Ibanez sent one flying.
Three back-to-back-to-back homers, to give the Angels the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 1st, an inning where Colón surrendered extra base hits to the first 5 out of 7 hitters he faced.
But what was a manageable game became a nightmare for the Mets in the 4th inning when the Angels stretched the lead to 7-1, on their way to a series-winning 14-2 decision on Sunday.
In all three games against the Angels, the Mets had the lead at one point in the game, only to see the opposition come back. Schuck's homer in the 6th inning on Friday night tied things before a hit batsman in the 11th inning with the bases loaded brought home the winning run. Then on Saturday, the Mets were one out away from victory when Ibanez sent a three run shot over the wall to tie the game. The Mets were able to win in the 13th inning on Anthony Recker's long shot.
The Mets travel to Phoenix to face the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight. First pitch is 9:40pm.
SOAPY EXPERIENCE
The Adirondack Phantoms and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers were ready to go for their Saturday night game at Webster Bank Arena. Only one problem, the ice wasn't.
The ice was damaged and deemed unsafe after a rave took place on top of the covered ice surface on Friday. The party, dubbed as "Foam N' Glow", features loud music and foam and takes place at venues across the country. However, the ice surface wasn't completely secure from the foam, as some foam seeped onto the surface of the ice, damaging the sheet with holes and bumps.
Officials found the surface too dangerous for players to play on, and the game was postponed.
The two teams play tonight, 7PM at Webster Bank Arena.
MY DEAR WATSON
Congratulations to Bubba Watson, 2014 Masters Champion. Watson overcame a 2-over 74 on "Moving Day" with birdies on the 4th, 6th, 8th and 9th holes on the Front 9. Although he bogied on the 10th, he regained that stroke on the 13th hole as he was the only golfer to score more than one under-70 round in the tournament.
Jonas Blixt and Jordan Spieth tied for 2nd.
It was the 2nd time Bubba Watson won the green jacket.
