Boys Basketball: A quick guide to all 20 teams

At 10AM Friday Morning, the first of 15 basketball games to be played at the Glens Falls Civic Center will tip off, culminating in five state champions being crowned on the hardwood floor.

Many of these teams have seen the insides of the Glens Falls Civic Center before, including the return of Mount Vernon, who has an unprecedented 10 state titles.  Bridgehampton makes their first appearance in Glens Falls in well over 15 years, and Section 2 will fill the Glens Falls Civic Center as three teams will play on Friday and Saturday.

Let's take a look at each of the teams, starting with the Class D teams.


Please note: For Section 2 teams, "Last Glens Falls appearance" reflects their last trip to Glens Falls for the state tournament, as the Section 2 Championships (Except for AA) are regularly held at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

CLASS D
NEW YORK MILLS
Mascot: Marauders
Location: New York Mills, Section 3 (Utica suburbs)
Record: 21-3
Coach: Mike Adey

Championships: 3

Last Glens Falls appearance: 2014
(won championship over Catholic Central, 57-50 in overtime)

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 44-39 over Laurens (Section 4).

About the team: Terrance Nichols scored 16 points as the Marauders punched their third straight trip to Glens Falls.  He leads the team with 18.6 points per game, and is a defensive threat with 2.3 steals per game.  Andrew Surprenant is another offensive threat, scoring 7.8 points per game.  Luke Sunderlin will also be a player to watch out for, especially behind the arch.  His 39% three-point shooting is tops among the regular shooters for the Marauders.

INTERNATIONAL PREP
Mascot: Presidents
Location: Buffalo, Section 6
Record: 19-5
Coach: Shaunessy Ryan

(lost to Friends Academy as Class C team in semifinal, 53-48 in overtime)

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 83-79 over Prattsburgh (Section 5).

About the team: Davon Gant led the way with 27 points and 19 rebounds as the Presidents won their Regional Final game against Prattsburgh. In that game, Prattsburgh nearly came back from a double-digit deficit in the third quarter as International Prep held on for victory.

MORIAH
Mascot: Vikings
Location: Port Henry, Section 7
Record: 23-0
Coach: Brian Cross

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 59-49 over Germantown (Section 2).

(lost to New York Mills 57-24 in semifinal)

About the team: Taylor Slattery and Adam Jaquish return to the Glens Falls Civic Center as two dangerous tall players to watch out for. Adam Jaquish is an all-around athlete, averaging 18 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and nearly 3 blocks per game.  Taylor Slattery isn't your prolific tall rebounder, but needs to be watched on the court for his 14.6 points per game.   Jarrod Macdougal also needs to be watched, averaging 9 points per game.

And the tough thing .. none of these three are SENIORS.

BRIDGEHAMPTON
Mascot: Killer Bees
Location: Bridgehampton, Section 11 (Suffolk County, Long Island)
Record: 20-2

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 60-39 over Livingston Manor (Section 8).

About the team: For the team that has won eight championship titles, seems strange that it has been a 17-year gap since the last time the Killer Bees have invaded the Glens Falls Civic Center.  Charles Manning Jr., Josh Lamison and Tylik Furman are the heart and soul of the Killer Bees, combining for 50 of the team's 67 points per game.  Elijah Jackson and Matthew Hostetter are also scorers, making a dangerous five-man crew.

Charles Manning Jr. scored 21 points in Bridgehampton's Regional Final win over Livingston Manor, while Josh Lamison led the team with 22 points.

CLASS C
WATERVILLE
Mascot: Indians
Location: Waterville, Section 3 (About 20 miles southwest of Utica)
Record: 24-0
Coach:Coby Maxam

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 54-41 over Newfield (Section 4).

(lost to Hoosic Valley 62-58 in the Semifinal)

About the team: 2014 All Tournament Team representative Zach Sawyer returns to Glens Falls.  He averages nearly 22 points per game and 2 steals per game.  He scored 24 points in Waterville's win over Newfield.  Hunter Williams and Jake English are secondary scorers, and both crash the boards too.  English is the distributor of the offense, with 114 assists through the course of the season.  Watch out for Hunter Williams on defense, he leads the Indians with 23 blocked shots.

LYONS
Mascot: Lions
Location: Lyons, Section 5 (40 miles east of Rochester)
Record: 19-3
Coach: Zac Young

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 67-63 over Middle Early College (Section 6)

Last Glens Falls Appearance: 1997
(lost to CBA-Syracuse 66-54 in the Class C State Championship)

About the team: Chris Peay scored 20 points and brought in 10 rebounds in the Section V C3 Championship.  He was helped with Adam VanBuskirk, who came off the bench to score 12 points, 9 coming from behind the arch.


LAKE GEORGE
Mascot: Warriors
Location: Lake George, Section 2 (About 50 miles north of Albany, 10 miles north of Glens Falls)
Record: 24-1
Coach: Dave Jones

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 70-58 over Potsdam (Section 10).

Championships: 1
Last Championship: 2013
Last Glens Falls Appearance: 2013
(won the Class C State Championship 55-45 over Pine Plains)

About the team: Joel Wincowski scored 48 points in the Warriors win over the Potsdam Sandstoners in the Regional Final.  He is Section 2's all-time career scorer, replacing Jimmer Fredette's name from the top spot during the Section 2 Tournament.  He averages 33 points per game, top in Section 2.  Kyle Jones has emerged as an outside scoring threat for the Warriors, and so too has Dylan Hubbard.

HALDANE
Mascot: Blue Devils
Location: Cold Spring, Section 1 (15 miles south of Beacon)
Record: 18-4
Coach: Joe Virgadamo

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 39-32 over Stony Brook (Section 11).

Championships: None

Last Glens Falls Appearance: 2001
(lost to Batavia-Notre Dame 60-54 in the semifinals)

About the team: Ryan McCollum led the Blue Devils with 10 points in the Regional Final win over Stony Brook.  Peter Hoffman was held to 5 points after scoring 19 against Chester in the Regional Semifinals.  Garret Quigley was taken out in the first quarter with an ankle injury.  Haldane carried a 22-9 lead into the halftime break, and held off a comeback bid in the fourth quarter for the victory.

CLASS B
WESTHILL
Mascot: Warriors
Location: Syracuse, Section 3
Record: 21-2
Coach: Kevin King

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 67-39 over Chenango Valley (Section 4).

About the team: .Jordan Roland and Tyler Reynolds are the key go-to players for Westhill, combining for over 800 points, which equates to 38 points per game.  Reynolds is the team's three point threat, scoring 56 long bombs over the course of the regular season.   Jordan Roland scored 26 points in the Regional Final win over Chenango Valley.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
Mascot: Lions
Location: Rochester, Section 5
Record: 21-3
Coach: Reggie Simmons

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 57-55 over East (Section 6).

Last Glens Falls Appearance: First ever trip to Glens Falls.

About the team: Keith McGee scored 26 points in the regional final against East, 21 of those points coming in the first half.  Shabazz Mosley is guy to watch for inside the paint.

OGDENSBURG FREE ACADEMY
Mascot: Blue Devils
Location: Ogdensburg, Section 10 (on the banks of the St. Lawrence River)
Record: 21-3
Coach: Mark Henry

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 57-42 over Hoosick Falls (Section 2).

(lost to Westhill 74-67 in the Semifinals)

About the team: Ogdensburg has lost only three games this season, all to Section 2 teams.  Their non-conference resume includes a tight loss against Cohoes and double-digit losses to Albany Academy and Scotia.  Kinnon LaRose, who will be heading to Siena in the fall, leads the Blue Devils with over 30 points per game, and cleans the boards well with 9 rebounds a game.  Jack Manke helps LaRose, scoring better than 13 points per game, and Dakota Brady can also be a contributing scorer.

WOODLANDS
Mascot: Falcons
Location: Hartsdale, Section 1 (just west of White Plains in Westchester County)
Record: 21-3
Coach: Robert Murphy

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 68-58 over Southampton (Section 11).

Last Glens Falls Appearance: 2014
(lost to Olean 71-63 in the Semifinals)

About the team: Brandon Johnson led the Falcons with 24 points as they beat Long Island's Southampton in the Regional Final.  Jamil Gambari contributed with 23 points and Ross Joseph scored 13.  The Falcons have yet to lose to Class B competition, with their three losses coming at the hands of Class A and AA teams.  Pierre Lys is the man who gets the offense into motion, leading the team with better than 6 assists per game.

CLASS A
VALLEY STREAM SOUTH
Mascot: Falcons
Location: Valley Stream, Section 8 (Nassau County, about 5 miles east of the Borough of Queens)
Record: 19-4
Coach: Matt Johnsen

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 61-58 over Bayport-Blue Point (Section 11).

Last Glens Falls Appearance: First ever trip to Glens Falls

About the team: The Falcons nearly blew an eight-point lead with less than 30 seconds left to play, but got help by the name of Josh Robinson, who blocked a potential game-tying bucket to preserve the win for Valley Stream South, the lone Section 8 team that will make the trip up to Glens Falls from Nassau County.  Dana King leads the Falcons with 20.7 points per game, Hall Elisias is the team's leading rebounder with 13.5 rebounds per game.  He pulled in 22 against Bayport-Blue Point.

GREECE-ATHENA
Mascot: Trojans
Location: Rochester, Section 5
Record: 23-0
Coach: Jim Johnson

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 62-42 over Williamsville South (Section 6)

(won over Liverpool 60-37 for the Class A State Championship)

About the team: Anthony Lamb scored 23 points in Greece-Athena's win over Williamsville South in the Regional Final.  Zac DiSalvo added 13 for the Trojans.

SCOTIA

Location: Scotia, Section 2 (10 miles northwest of Albany, near Schenectady)
Record: 24-0
Coach: Jim Giammattei

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 62-54 over CBA-Syracuse (Section 3).

Championships: 1

(won 66-44 over East High for the Class A State Championship)

About the team: Eyes focus on leading scorer Joe Cremo, who will be taking his talents down 15 miles down Route 5 over to the University of Albany at the end of his high school career.  And with good reason, as the senior averages better than 27 points per game.  But teams that single him out on defense will get into trouble when they leave Mike Palleschi, Joe Almond, Scott Stoppera or Diamond Corker unguarded.  Scotia moves the ball efficiently, and is a team that takes advantage of a team's mistakes.  These talents are a good reason why Scotia carries a 51 game win streak into the Glens Falls Civic Center

SPRING VALLEY
Mascot: Tigers
Location: Spring Valley, Section 1 (Rockland County)
Record: 23-1
Coach: Willie Worsley

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 65-62 over Saugerties (Section 9).

Championships: 1
Last Championship: 1982
Last Glens Falls Appearance: 1996

About the team: Rickey McGill nailed a three point bucket with seconds to go in the regional final against Saugerties.  He led the team with 21 points, and Darnell Edge added 10 for the Tigers.  Spring Valley's lone loss was to Greece-Athena, falling 76-58 over the holiday break, bringing the potential of a rematch of a regular season game being played for the  NYS Championship on Sunday.

CLASS AA

BRENTWOOD
Mascot: Indians
Location: Brentwood, Section 11 (About 7 miles northwest of Islip)
Record: 23-1
Coach: Kevin O'Reilly

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 72-51 over Baldwin (Section 8).

Championships: 0
Last Championship: 0
Last Glens Falls Appearance: 2014
(lost to Green Tech 52-44 in the Class AA State Semifinals)

About the team: Brentwood comes together with an arsenal of weapons.  Jamel Allen is the team's leading scorer with 16.3 points per game, which seems low by comparison to other players in the 20-team field, but the Indians come with four players with better than 10 points per game.  Michael Almonacy scores 14 per game, and Ali Mableton and Tavon Ginyard both average 13 per game.  The Indians vary who is their set-up man, as Ginyard and Almonacy both have over 6 dimes per game.  Allen will be collecting the rebounds inside, averaging 13 rebounds per game.  Brentwood's lone loss came against Wings Academy, the PSAL Class AA champion who will be the NYSPHSAA champion's first opponent in the Federation Tournament next weekend at SEFCU.


AQUINAS INSTITUTE
Mascot: Little Irish
Location: Rochester, Section 5
Record: 22-0
Coach: Michael Grosodonia

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 76-70 over Jamestown (Section 6).

Last Glens Falls Appearance: 2012
(lost to Mount Vernon 61-57 in the Class AA State Championship)

About the team: The Little Irish overcame a 31 point effort from Jamestown's Zack Panebianco to win.  It's a committee effort for Aquinas, and the average stats show that as only two players average better than 10 points per game.  Melvin Grayson and D.J. Roberts are those two, and behind them are three players who average 8 points per game.  Players are rotated in and out through out the game, which leads to no one player averaging more than 21 minutes per game.

SHENENDEHOWA
Mascot: Plainsmen
Location: Clifton Park, Section 2
Record: 23-0
Coach: Tony Dzikas

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 70-64 over Henninger (Section 3) in overtime.

(won over Bishop Ludden 69-52 for the Class A State Championship)

About the team: Shenendehowa is led by the Huerter combination of Kevin Huerter and Thomas Huerter.  They combine for over 31 points per game for the Plainsmen.  Brandon Fischer is also a scoring threat, and Peter Bebic has 9 points per game.  Fischer scored 18 points, a season high, in the overtime win over Henninger to advance to the State Semifinals.

MOUNT VERNON
Mascot: Knights
Location: Mount Vernon, Section 1
Record: 19-3
Coach: Bob Cimmino

How they made it to Glens Falls: Won 76-57 over Middletown (Section 9).

(won over Aquinas Institute 61-57 for the Class AA State Championship)

About the team: The State's most decorated team, Mount Vernon returns to the Glens Falls Civic Center after a two year absence.  The team is youthful, with only one senior on the regular starting five, Justin Alleyne.  He's joined by three sophomores and one junior.  Marco Morency led the Knights with 17 points, getting 11 of those points from the charity stripe, in the regional final against Middletown.  Derrick Hamlin scored 16 points, and Marlon Taylor scored 14.  Mount Vernon is another team that likes to use several players, as 11 players got into the boxscore last Saturday.
