GAMES TO WATCH:

Saratoga Springs at Shenendehowa:  The rivalry between these two schools 13 miles apart features two squads that won convincingly in their Week 1 matches.  Wes Englintine should be a lot of fun to watch, throwing 3 touchdowns in the Blue Streaks win over Niskayuna in Week 1.  The Plainsmen built on a 28-20 halftime lead over Guilderland, thanks in part to Griffin Wallner, who scored 2 second half touchdowns for Shen.  

Troy at Guilderland: Troy easily handed Columbia a loss last Friday, but this week won't be as easy.  The test for the defending State Champions increases with a road trip to Guilderland.  The Dutchmen played competitive with Shenendehowa last week, but couldn't muster the comeback to fall to 0-1 on the season.  

Hudson at Schuylerville: Hudson had their home debut spoiled by the defending Class B State Champions last week, now has to go on the road to Schuylerville.  It's been well documented about the short roster at Schuylerville, but when healthy, they are a strong bunch.  This was proven last Friday when they won in Rotterdam over the Schalmont Sabres, who will be playing in another game to watch.

Schalmont at Glens Falls: So after dropping their opening game against Schuylerville 47-14, the Sabres travel up to Glens Falls, where they will watch the defending State Champions play their first home game since the Sectional Semifinals last year.  It'll be a loud environment at Putt LaMay field for sure.

Holy Trinity at Mechanicville: Mechanicville's offense exploded in their Week 1 game against Fonda-Fultonville.  Holy Trinity will be a stronger challenge, but they need to put up more than the 13 points that put up against Chatham last week.  The winner has a stronger case to host come Week 8 of the playoffs. 

Four Things That Shocked Us - Week 2:

4) Mechanicville ROLLS over Ichabod Crane

In this crossover game that was created because of Cohoes dropping varsity football for 2016, Mechanicville made a statement.

Now Ichabod Crane isn't a team with a history of success -- they have made the playoffs only once in their young program history -- but to be shut out 56-0 to a Class C school, it shows that the Red Raiders have a lot of promise in Section 2.

After two weeks, Mechanicville leads Section 2 in total points scored, scoring 56 points in both games this season.  Meanwhile, Ichabod Crane has yet to score a point, joining Ballston Spa in last in that category.

3) Class B, Reinfurt Division

Entering the season, who pegged the standings to read Cobleskill-Richmondville, Albany Academy and Hudson at 2-0, and Schalmont at 0-2, with a Ravena in the middle sitting at 1-1?

Call it an effect of Class B's scheduling procedures that saw the top seeds of the Reinfurt play the top seeds of the West from last season, and the middle seeds playing each other as well, but the end result has Cobleskill and Hudson feeling pretty good about themselves after two weeks of football.

But now the reality sets in.  As great (or bad) as those two weeks were, the real season begins for these teams as divisional play begins this Friday.  And those are the games that help determine where teams go in Week 8.

2) Warrensburg wins big under portable lights at home

Warrensburg played under the lights at home for the first time in program history on Friday night.  It was a festive atmosphere, made even better by the Burghers 48-20 win over the Rensselaer Rams.

There were some questions heading into the season about the Burghers.  There were talented kids left on the roster from last year, but combined with the graduates who are no longer there, how would the changes brought from new coach Mike Perrone affect the team's play?

Warrensburg's Week 1 shutout win over Fort Edward/Argyle wasn't much of an indication.  Fort Edward/Argyle is just getting their feet wet in varsity football after a year off, and Rensselaer has been a perennial power in Class D.

But instead, Warrensburg is the team that is 2-0, and Rensselaer will be hoping to pick up their first win of the season when they head over to Salem this Saturday.

1) Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne wins War Canoe.

Over the past few years, Corinth has grown to be a decent Section 2 program.  Lake George merged together with Hadley-Luzerne, but have yet to make a splash in Class C.  But the combined squad pieced together its biggest win since the merger on a semi-quiet Thursday night in Lake George, beating Corinth soundly, 47-16.

The shocker here isn't Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne winning the War Canoe, but how easily they won it over a team that has spent the last two seasons being among the top four teams in Class C.

Corinth is now 0-2 with losses to Cobleskill-Richmondville (non-conference) and Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne.  It doesn't get any easier for Corinth, having to play Hoosic Valley this Friday night.

Week 2: Winners and Losers

Let's take a look at how Week 2 went by looking at who scored big and who came up empty.

CLASS AA
WINNER: Tie: CBA + Shenendehowa.  These two teams helped cement their place as dangerous teams in Class AA, and which team will have the best path to the Empire Division #1 seed will get settled when the two meet up at CBA this Friday.  

LOSER: Saratoga Springs.  The Blue Streaks had a chance to make a strong statement with a non-divisional win over Shaker.  But going 0/1 on extra points and 0/2 on two point conversions coupled with surrendering two late touchdowns to the Blue Bison walking away winners and Saratoga Springs kicking off their divisional schedule with a 1-1 record.  

WEEK 3 MUST WATCH
Shenendehowa at CBA: These two teams have blown out their opponents in the first two weeks, making quite the case that it could come down to these two teams when settling who will get the Empire Division's #1 seed.  

Shaker at Schenectady: After posting wins over Ballston Spa and Albany, the Schenectady Patriots will get a better look at how good their team is with a showdown against Shaker.  The Blue Bison begin their divisional schedule after facing CBA and Saratoga Springs to kick off their season.

CLASS A
WINNER: Queensbury.  We already knew that Coach Irion's squad was looking good this year, but that idea was enhanced with a good win over Troy on Friday.  Coach Irion showed that his team can not only run the ball, but they can score on the pass and even kick for points.  Drew Wilson has complimented the offense as much as his counterpart last year, Aidan Switzer.  Juan Escamillia gives defenses something to think about on third down situations after booting a 47 yard field goal.

LOSER: Gloversville.  Gloversville got the job done in their Week 1 win over Green Tech, surviving a shootout to win the hard-fought game.  However, that win looks less impressive after the Huskies got shut out by Scotia 70-0, and when you couple that with Green Tech's 32 point loss to Burnt Hills, it doesn't make their 1-1 record look as good as it does on paper.

WEEK 3 MUST WATCH
Troy at Burnt Hills: Last year these two teams brought us two of the better games of the season, the first being in a rain-filled slugfest that required four extra frames in order to declare a winner, and the second being in the Sectional Semifinals, with Burnt Hills surviving a late raid by the Flying Horses to advance to the Super Bowl at Shenendehowa.

Averill Park at Amsterdam: Playoff positioning could come down to this game.  Averill Park already has down themselves a game in the Southeast Division after losing to Troy in Week 1 and cannot afford to lose another divisional game that could set themselves up with a bad seed heading into Week 8.  Amsterdam bounced back from their loss at the Dome with a good win over Mohonasen.

CLASS B
WINNER: Schamont.  They quickly disposed of last season's #1 seed in the Reinfurt, scoring the first 69 points before the Tigers were able to score 13 late.  Hunter Gac and Nick Gallo are massive threats for the Sabres.  These kids want to make it back to the Carrier Dome so badly. 

LOSER: Hudson.  Entering the season Hudson was talked about for their explosive speed and potential to surprise some this season.  They looked good in their first week win over Ichabod Crane.  But they didn't look good after getting shut out by Cobleskill on Friday.  With Ravena and Schalmont looming on their schedule, a bounce-back win is needed this week against Cohoes.

WEEK 3 MUST WATCH
Broadalbin-Perth at Schuylerville: Broadalbin-Perth and Schuylerville are the front-runners for the Class B West crown, with the rest of the field trailing at the first quarter pole of the season.  Who will gain the inside path to the #1 seed will be determined this Friday under the lights at Schuylerville High.  

CLASS C
WINNER: Tie - Coxsackie-Athens + Greenwich.  One team surprised the league in Week 1 by shutting out the team that has represented the south in the Super Bowl for four of the last five years.  The other is transitioning well after advancing up from Class D.  And the neat thing ... both teams face each other in Week 5.

LOSER: Watervliet.  It was a magical Friday evening in the Arsenal City.  Watervliet was unveiling its new beautiful field, complete with lights that will allow the Cannoneers to play under the lights for years to come.  And then the game began.  Watervliet lost control of the magical evening, emphasized by the hail mary from Robert Denman to end the first half with Voorheesville up 23-6.  

WEEK 3 MUST WATCH
Mechanicville at Voorheesville: Both teams have jumped out to a 2-0 start to become the front-runners for the Central Division.  With only the divisional winner guaranteed the playoff spot, and the rest having to hope for the wild card system, games like this become very important.

CLASS D
WINNER: Tie - Hoosic Valley + Whitehall.  We already know Cambridge and Rensselaer are strong threats to play in Week 10, but Whitehall shows that they could very well be a threat to replace one of those two teams.  Whitehall's crushing of a team that hasn't seen a win since October 26th, 2012 won't mean anything when it comes to playoff seedings, but it does show what the Railroaders are capable of doing.  Hoosic Valley is playoff ineligible as a C playing a D schedule, but looked very good in their win over Fort Edward on Saturday.  

LOSER: Fort Edward.  Fort Edward had several miscues on their way to their 47-14 loss to the Hoosic Valley Indians.  Four straight bad snaps on fourth down punting plays came back to haunt the Flying Forts, especially on the first one where the punter picked up the ball, tried to kick and wound up missing to give the Indians great field advantage.  The Flying Forts had an opportunity to get back into the game after their first score in the second quarter, but lost control once the Indians scored on the next offensive drive to make it 21-8.

WEEK 3 MUST WATCH
Rensselaer at Cambridge: These two squads have met to determined the top two seeds in the last few years.  While the winner isn't guaranteed the #1 seed, their chances of obtaining the top seed at the end of the season will be much easier.

Canajoharie at Warrensburg: In Class D this year, four teams will make the playoffs out of the seven.  Four teams sit at 2-0, but one of those four is Hoosic Valley, ineligible for the postseason.  The remaining three teams, all at 0-2, will be fighting for that last playoff spot.  The winner here has a jump above the other two for the final spot.
