2013 in Review

Oh, what an exciting 2013 it was.  Both on the local scene and on the national stage, there were plenty of memories that will not expire as the calendar turns at Midnight.

The Forgettable

Florida Gators Block Each Other:
It was a forgettable year for Florida Gator football.  But, unfortunately, because of this play, the Gators mishaps in the 2013 season will take a long time to forget.  Voted as "Worst-of-the-Worst" on that cable sports channel for weeks after the play occurred, the offensive linemen involved will never live this down.

Who Wants to Catch This Fly Ball?
Zack Wheeler's second career start was less memorable than the first, but he was let off the hook after this zany play where Daniel Murphy should have been out on a fly ball.  The dropped ball gave the Mets life, but Murphy was left stranded.  Chicago would win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning on a solo walk-off homer.

New York Professional Football

It was a forgettable year for professional football in New York.  The two New Jersey teams saw their seasons end without fanfare, as the Giants kicked off the season with six straight losses.  They won five of their next six as they returned to playoff contention in an NFC East where nobody wanted to take a commanding lead, but then back-to-back teams against West Coast teams nailed the coffin shut on their season.

The Jets season began with news that Mark Sanchez would miss a part of the season with a shoulder injury sustained in their preseason game against the New York Giants. This led to Geno Smith being the Jets prime starting QB, and the rookie's inconsistency led to inconsistent results for the Jets, who couldn't win back-to-back games until the final two games of the season.

Like the Jets, the Buffalo Bills started a newly-drafted Quarterback for much of the season in EJ Manuel.  But Manuel's season consisted of three knee injuries, one that took him out of the final two preseason games and made him an uncertainty for the opening game against the New England Patriots, a second during the Thursday Night Football game against the Cleveland  Browns, and a third towards the end of the season.  There were moments where the Bills showed signs of defeating their playoff-less streak, but by the end, the Bills defaulted to old ways, missing the playoffs and finishing last in the AFC East.

Boston Marathon Bombing
On Monday, April 15th, the world was watching Boston as the traditional Patriots Day marathon took place down the city streets.  By 3PM, the world's reason for watching Boston changed after explosions rocked near the finish line.

No longer was it about the race.  It was about finding out who did this, and why.  By that Friday night, that search concluded as police picked up their suspect alive.

The Memorable

Boston Strong:

One of the most forgettable moments of 2013 led to one of the most memorable moments.  Two days after the 2013 Marathon Bombing, the first sporting event to be held in the city of Boston after the attack led to the crowd consuming Rene Rancourt and taking over the singing of the National Anthem before the Boston Bruins home game against the Buffalo Sabres.

It was one of the best crowd performances of the National Anthem, performed in front of a national stage.

From NESN - PARENTAL ADVISORY NOTE: Contains the uncensored profanity.

Three days later, Boston Red Sox's David Ortiz brought another memorable moment post-bombing as he spoke to the crowd during a pregame commemoration, and during his heart-felt speech let out an obscenity live on the air.

Perhaps using the Boston Strong to inspire them, the Boston Red Sox would win the AL East pennant, and then finished off the season with a 4-2 series win against the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series.

42

It was the farewell tour this season for the last player to done the jersey number 42, Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera.  Through his farewell tour, teams gave him gifts, crowds gave him standing ovations, but one of the best was in the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field when Jim Leyland, not wanting to risk the National League coming from behind to take the lead and voiding any opportunity for Rivera to make it out onto the field, sent Rivera out for the 8th inning following Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline".  Three things made this special: The crowd, the television crew at FOX for letting this air raw without any commentary or graphic, sans the "bug" on the top right corner, and the outpouring of support from players and managers alike.

Section 2: Title Town

How do you top a year where three teams make it to Syracuse's Carrier Dome and two of them win the state championship in Football?  How about a year where FOUR Section 2 teams carry home State Basketball titles (Troy girls, Watervliet, Lake George and Argyle boys), and Section 2 hockey team wins the State Division 1 Hockey championship (Saratoga Springs).  Fort Ann sweeping the baseball and softball titles in Class D, and the Queensbury Spartans coming close, falling in Binghamton in their title chance.  Then in the fall, Burnt Hills came to Glens Falls in an attempt to obtain a Volleyball title, and the Queensbury Cross Country team.  It all culminated in the Queensbury Spartans football team doing something no other team in the local tri-county area had done before, win the state championship in football, and did so in commanding fashion, winning 36-7 over Williamsville North.

High School Sports WatchList: Week 3 Weekend 12/20-22

As this is the final weekend of league play for High School Basketball before the Holiday Recess, teams will be wanting to make a statement with a full schedule of Friday night games.  Plus there's some good high school hockey on the docket, too.  Here's the ones we think are the ones you might want to go watch:

Boys Basketball:
Foothills Council
Glens Falls at South Glens Falls - Glens Falls found themselves in troubles after a tough middle, where they were outscored 43-19 in the 2nd and 3rd Quarters against a Gloversville squad that is playing really good ball early in the season.  South Glens Falls might be an exhausted team by the late stages of the game as they will be playing Johnstown on Thursday night to make up the snow-postponed affair from Tuesday.  South Glens Falls is another team who saw 2nd Quarter problems turn into a loss, being outscored 27-13 in that frame against the Hudson Falls Tigers.

Gloversville at Johnstown - As mentioned, Gloversville is playing strong early in the season, and depending on the Thursday game, could be playing a 3-1 Johnstown squad that is wanting something to cheer about after getting demolished by league-favorite Scotia.  Gloversville doesn't see the Tartans until January 7th, and would love to set up an undefeated showdown for the top bragging right in the league.

Adirondack League
Hadley-Luzurne at Corinth - Hadley-Luzurne is one of three teams to score a season-high 63 points against the Argyle Scots.  But like the Fort Ann Cardinals, it was in a losing effort.  But they bounced back with a 72-67 league victory against North Warren. The Corinth Tomahawks's Shippee brothers combined for 26 points in their win over Bolton on Wednesday.  With Hudson Falls over the holidays, and a league contest against Hartford to start the New Year, Corinth would love the momentum of a league win here.

Salem at Hartford - A defensive stand against Lake George, and we'd be talking about the 4-1 Tanagers at this stage.  Joel Wincowski scored a game-winning bucket in the closing seconds as Hartford lost the first of back-to-back games against the top dogs of the Adirondack League.  They took their aggression out on Bolton, outscoring them 48-2 in the first half.  Things were a little closer against Whitehall, but Tad Jones got the job done with his 31 points.  Salem topped Fort Edward, but gave up a lot of foul shots as the Flying Forts gained 27 points at the charity stripe.

Wasaren League
Hoosic Valley at Stillwater - This isn't just a local rivalry.  This is potentially a battle for the top spot in the Wasaren League. Valley's lone loss was against Section 7's Peru, who prevailed 73-59 at Waterford.  Mike Pierre leads the Indians with over 21 points per game, and John Rooney is just under 19 points per game.  Stillwater's blemishes includes a 61-40 league loss to Schuylerville and a 55-29 loss to Spa Catholic.

Girls Basketball
Foothills Council
Hudson Falls at Queensbury - Both teams enter the contest undefeated in league play. Hudson Falls saw their Tuesday game against Scotia get snowed out, rescheduled for January 6th, but saw it's conference schedule start with a 55-42 win over South Glens Falls.  Bri McKinney scored 28 points as she used her depth to score 7 three pointers.  Jillian Davis and Kelly McLaughlin outscored Broadalbin-Perth on Wednesday as the Spartans prevailed 54-13.

Adirondack League
Fort Edward at Fort Ann - The Flying Forts outscored the Salem Generals 34-1 on Wednesday night, easily winning 90-17.  The squad that made it to Troy last year look strong to do the same, but will have to survive an undefeated Fort Ann squad to maintain their spot on the top of the Adirondack League

Boys Hockey - Capital District High School Hockey League
Queensbury at Bethlehem (Fri 7:40p.m.)- The Queensbury Spartans are win-less, but all those games are against non-conference opponents.  Finally back into the warm confides of the CDHSHL, the Spartans look to get points against a hungry Bethlehem Eagles squad.

Rome Free Academy (Sect III) at Saratoga (Sat 4:30p.m.) - Rome is undefeated heading into their Friday night game against Cicero-North Syracuse.  This could be the test the defending state champions need to see how well the 2013-14 Blue Streaks stack against the rest of the state.  After skating to a 3-3 draw against rival Shenendehowa, the Blue Streaks will want to put a strong effort at the Weibel Avenue rink.

High School Sports: Winter Recap 12/08-12/14

Foothills Council play begain for all 8 teams in the basketball league on Friday.  It may be early, but we're already seeing teams become threats to still be playing in March.

Meanwhile, in hockey, the section's lone Division 2 team still remains without a win, and the tri-conglomerate team consisting of Hudson Falls, Glens Falls and South Glens Falls players earned a shutout victory on Thursday.

Here's our recap of what happened in local High School Sports for the past week:
Boys Basketball - Foothills Council
Foothills Council fans were treated to a local rivalry when the Queensbury Spartans met up with the Glens Falls Indians at the Blue Gym in Queensbury to kick off the Foothills Council schedule.

Glens Falls used a 17-6 2nd Quarter and then kept the Spartans at bay after they clawed back in the 3rd Quarter to win 61-55 in another close renewal of this tight rivalry.  Jordan Green led the Indians with 26 points, helped with Caleb Canty's 19.

The 2nd Quarter was beneficial for the Hudson Falls Tigers as they beat the South Glens Falls Bulldogs 57-45 for their 2nd win of the season.  Wyatt Gorham scored 18 for the Tigers, who outscored the Bulldogs 27-13 in the 2nd Quarter.  Travis Ramsey scored 16 for the Bulldogs.

Scotia already looks like they're going to be the team to beat in the Foothills after their 71-24 dismantling of the Johnstown Sir Bills.  Austin Riska's 7 points was the most any Sir Bill could drop against the Tartans. Joe Cremo scored 23 points and was supported with Alex Sausville's 19.

And Asa Barnhill and James Scholl put up 17 points each as Gloversville wore out Broadalbin-Perth 57-48.  Gloversville's 2-0, but will get tested when they host Glens Falls on Tuesday.

Boys Basketball - Adirondack League
The Argyle Scots bounced back from their season-opening loss to Hoosick Falls with four consecutive conference wins, including a 93-63 win over Hadley-Luzurne on Friday.  Kobe Lufkin is starting to fill Joey Lufkin's shoes, scoring 25 points to put his season's average to just below 23 points per game.  Lufkin's 19 three pointers this season is tied with Troy Anderson of Waterford for the top spot in Section 2. Before that, Argyle slowed down co-top scorer in Section 2's Tad Jones, holding him to only 14 points in Argyle's 65-51 win.

Speaking of Tad Jones, he scored 47 points against Bolton on Friday as Hartford bounced back from their loss to Argyle with a 79-31 victory.  Josh Persons scored 15 points in the loss for Bolton.

Some have noted the Fort Ann Cardinals as a team to watch out in potentially stopping Argyle as league champions.  They prepped for this Wednesday's showdown with the Scotts with a 70-45 win over North Warren.  Derek Durkee was a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line on his way to 25 points for the Cardinals.

After two barn burners, the Lake George Warriors made easy work of the Whitehall Railroaders in their 80-33 win.  Joel Wincowski continued where he left off last year, scoring 30 points in the victory.

Girls Basketball - Foothills Council
Like with the boys, Friday was the start of Foothills Council play for the girls as Scotia and Broadalbin-Perth keep their records clean, Hudson Falls could make things interesting after their win over South Glens Falls.  And the Queensbury girls came away winners over Glens Falls.

Girls Basketball - Adirondack League
Friday will be a big showdown as two undefeated squads meet up in Fort Ann.  Fort Edward, last year's Class D Sectional Champions, will get to see how good their team is when they face the 5-0 Fort Ann Cardinals.  Alexis Thomas scored 18 in Fort Edward's 64-46 win over Corinth.  She leads the Flying Forts with just under 20 points per game.  But she'll be meeting a Cardinal defense that has stopped teams in their tracks, holding two teams to only 10 points for the entire game.  The Cardinals leading scorer, Molly Bailey, scored a game-high 15 points against North Warren on Friday.

Lake George and Warrensburg look to be the teams to watch in the West, and which one of those two will sit on top of the conference will be determined on Tuesday.  Erin Langworthy is a top scorer for Warrensburg, scoring 29 points against Salem on Thursday.

Boys Hockey - Capital District High School Hockey League
The tri-conglomerate of Glens Falls-Hudson Falls-South Glens Falls (Tri-Falls as I call them on Twitter) picked up their first win of the season on Thursday as they shut out the Bethlehem Eagles 4-0.  Chris Haas, Drew Nizolek, Kraid Price and Jared Thomas each scored goals as the Rivermen earned the first two points of the young season.  The Rivermen travel up north to Olympic Arena in Lake Placid next weekend.

However, the Queensbury Spartans couldn't do the same, losing both games of the Salmon River tournament as they lost 3-1 to Massena on Friday, then was shut out against Salmon River on Saturday.  The Spartans are 0-6, however all 6 games they've played were against non-conference opponents.  They will face their first Section 2 opponent of the season on Friday as they travel down to Bethlehem to face the Eagles.

Saratoga Springs pieced together their second league win as they beat Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa 3-0. The Blue Streaks sit on top of the Capital District High School Hockey League with a 3-1 record, which will get challenged this Wednesday when they face the Shenendehowa Plainsmen for the first of two meetings this year.

Other Musings
The 2013-14 Winter High School Sports season kicks off on 1230 Fox Sports Radio this Tuesday as we travel to South Glens Falls as the Bulldogs face the Johnstown Sir Bills in Boys Basketball.  Both teams are searching for their first league win.  South Glens Falls needs the momentum boost badly, as they face Glens Falls on Friday, then face defending Class B Champions Watervliet over the holiday break.  Then after school resumes, they have a Friday night Foothills Council showdown against Scotia.

Travis Ramsey leads the offense for the Bulldogs, scoring 21 points.  He is the lone Bulldog to be averaging better than 10 points per game at this young juncture of the season.  Austin Riska is the leading Sir Bill, scoring 39 points in the 3 games this season.  But his free throw shooting needs work, going 9/19 from the charity stripe.  He's not the lone Sir Bill to convert less than 50% of their free throws, as Jonathan Heroth is 27% from the stripe with 11 attempts.  This could become key in late-game situations.

Broadcast will begin approximately 7:15 p.m. on 1230 FOX Sports Radio with the 1230 FOX Sports Warmup.

Glens Falls Golden Eagles 2014 Schedule unveiled

As temperatures prepare to dip below zero for the first time this winter, here's something to warm you up.  The 2014 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League schedule was released today.

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles will lead off their 48 game regular season at home on June 4th against the Newark Pilots, and conclude their season on July 30th against the Pilots in Newark.  All home games will be played at East Field, and should be 7 p.m. starts unless otherwise noted by the Golden Eagles.

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League gives college players the opportunity to play baseball during the summer months, and was the launch pad for players like Hunter Pence, who played for the Schenectady Mohawks in 2002.

Complete schedule under the jump:

NFL Week 15 Picks and Viewing Guide

There's not a strong library of compelling matchups in Week 15.

You've got two games where both competitors will be watching football instead of playing come January.  You've got games where one of the teams needs a pick-me-up after last week.  And you've got teams who would love to head into the last two weeks resting players instead of fighting hard for playoff spots.

Please Note: Picks are for entertainment purposes only, and 1230 FOX Sports Radio/North Country Sports Radio will not be held responsible if you use our picks for other purposes.

Thursday Night Football: San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos - on NFL Network - The Denver Broncos could be rather interested in the Kansas City/Oakland game with a win, as a loss by the Chiefs would clinch the west for Payton Manning and the Broncos.  The Chargers are fighting for their playoff lives, as that Week 1 collapse against the Houston Texans is coming back to hurt them now.  But with the home field advantage, the Broncos should have no troubles dealing with the Chargers.

Pick: Denver Broncos

Sunday Games
Early Games
Seattle Seahawks at New York Giants - on FOX 23 (Cable Channel 7) - The Seahawks suffered a setback when the 49'ers showed that home field matters in their 19-17 win last week.  The Seahawks know that the New Orleans Saints are breathing down their proverbial necks and want to make sure the 12th man is on their side come next month.  A big chance comes as the Seahawks play where they hope to be playing come the first Sunday in February as they face the New York Giants.  After getting out of an early-season hole, the Giants have now suffered two losses in their last three games and have now assured them a spot on the outside looking in come next month.  Eli Manning has one more touchdown than he does interceptions in the last 5 weeks, a key stat that could come back to haunt him as the Giants look not to be booed on their own stage.  But knowing East Rutherford, NJ, they'll be regardless.

Pick: Seattle Seahawks

Buffalo Bills at Jacksonville Jaguars - on 1230 FOX Sports Radio, AM1230 - Sportswriters and media members in Western New York mentioned that the Buffalo Bills left their game in Toronto.  It could also be argued that the Buffalo Bills are still on the bye week after suffering back-to-back losses against the #3 and #4 team in the NFC South.  EJ Manuel had the worst game of his professional career against the Bucs, getting picked off 4 times as the Bills as a collective unit looked nothing like the team that shined proudly against the New York Jets. The Jacksonville Jaguars are showing that they are trying to fight, winning their last three games.  It will either become a breakout game for Buffalo, or one that will showcase what needs to be fixed come the offseason.

Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars

New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins - The Dolphins looked confident in September.  Not so much these days. Pick: New England
Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts - Houston continues their freefall.  Pick: Indianapolis
Philadelphia Eagles at Minnesota Vikings - After last week's snowbowl, one almost wished the Eagles would be outside again.  Minnesota, however, will be happier indoors.  Pick: Minnesota
San Francisco 49'ers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers - The 49'ers last week proved that they are still a team to watch out for.  The Bucs looked good against Buffalo, but will find the competition harder this time around.  Pick: San Francisco
Chicago Bears at Cleveland Browns - Quick turnaround for the Bears, who have a QB controversy in the best way possible after last week's sparkling performance by Josh McCown.  Cleveland nearly pulled the upset against New England.  Pick: Chicago
Washington Redskins at Atlanta Falcons - The Redskins are a mess.  Enough said.  Pick: Atlanta

Late Games
New York Jets at Carolina Panthers - on CBS-6 Albany WRGB - The Carolina Panthers had the opportunity to prove themselves as a top contender in the NFC, however all that has been silenced since their double-digit loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday Night Football.  The New York Jets suffered three straight losses before getting back on track with a win against Oakland.  Geno Smith looked better, but he's been picked off in 8 out of his last 10 games.  And with a stingy Carolina Panthers defense looking for a statement game after last week, it could be a long game ahead for Smith and the Jets.

Pick: Carolina Panthers

Green Bay Packers at Dallas Cowboys - on FOX 23 (Cable Channel 7) - Both teams are in the hunt for the playoffs, and a loss may not be disastrous for either squad.  But both teams need a win.  Aaron Rogers remains questionable for the Packers, and it'd be really nice if he was able to return for them to sculpt their playoff bid.  They narrowly beat Atlanta last week, lost to Detroit on Thanksgiving and tied Minnesota.  The Dallas Cowboys defense needs a pick-me-up after allowing Chicago to score on every possession except for the last, which was only halted due to the clock reaching double-zero at the end of the game.  The winner makes their playoff chances stronger.  The loser, gasps for air and holds for help.

Pick: Green Bay Packers

Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders - If Denver wins on Thursday, they'll be watching this game exclusively to see whether or not their team can clinch the West.  But unfortunately for the Broncos, the Chiefs play the Oakland Raiders.  Pick: Kansas City.
Arizona Cardinals at Tennessee Titans - The Arizona Cardinals look to help their Wild Card potential while the Titans hope to forget what happened to them the last two weeks.  Pick: Arizona
New Orleans Saints at St. Louis Rams - Although the Saints have a hard time winning away from the Superdome, Drew Brees shouldn't have a tough time fending off the Rams defenders.  Pick: New Orleans

Sunday Night
Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers - on Channel 13 - The Pittsburgh Steelers looked like they were rolling back into the playoff race, but then back-to-back setbacks against the Baltimore and Miami has put them back into the "In The Hunt" category.  However, the same story happened to Cincinnati earlier in the season - back-to-back losses to those two teams before rattling off three straight wins to be on the verge of a playoff spot.  And remember, these are the Bengals who knocked off New England earlier in the season in a driving rainstorm.

Pick: Cincinnati Bengals

Monday Night Football: Baltimore Ravens at Detroit Lions - on ESPN - Two 7-6 teams facing different fates face off on Monday night.  Baltimore is hoping for some help by way of the Steelers on Sunday night so they can put pressure on Cincinnati, currently two back of the division leaders.  Detroit has the edge against Chicago, but would like to keep pace with them should the Bears win, or take the outright lead should they lose.  Detroit will be very happy to be back indoors after the 8" snowfest in Philadelphia last week, but that indoor environment did little to aide them as they lost to Tampa Bay three weeks ago.  Baltimore has won four of their last five, with that 5th being a tight overtime loss to the Chicago Bears, to put them in a better position to make the playoffs.

Pick: Baltimore Ravens

Queensbury's Defense Leaps To Title

On the three hour drive, we were talking about the game we were traveling to, and made the comment about how the game will be determined by defense.  Which is to say, Whatever defense made the biggest plays would be the one to emerge victorious.

We found this out 6 1/2 minutes into the game.

Williamsville North deferred the kick to Queensbury, and Queensbury's run-friendly offense found the end zone as Tim Voorhis ran it in on the opening drive, which took 5 1/2 minutes to complete.

Williamsville North was unable to solve the mystery of the Queensbury defense in the opening drive, going three and out.  A bad snap led to Kody Bruno blocking the punt, which was scooped up by Eric Wettersten in for the touchdown to make it 14-0, Queensbury.

Williamsville North was able to figure out the Spartans defense on their next drive, which included several passes from their quarterback, Ryan Majewski, as they tightened up the game with their score to make it 14-7.

After Queensbury expanded on their lead, Williamsville North had an opportunity to make the game closer.  A touchdown would pull them back within 7, with them getting the ball first in the 3rd Quarter.  But as time began to expire, a sack proved fatal as the Williamsville North Spartans were unable to get set before the half.

Then John Irion threw a gadget, as Queensbury started the third quarter by recovering an onside kick.  This may have provided the turning point, as the defense took over.  One of the biggest height differences that the North Spartans tried to exploit was on 5' 8" Tim Voorhis, who was a half-foot shorter than the main receivers for Williamsville North, but countless times the small Voorhis would get the leap he needed to ensure the receivers wouldn't get the catch.

Two interceptions would seal the deal, as the Queensbury Spartans won 36-7 to earn their first title in school history.  It was Coach Irion's 110th win at the helm for the Queensbury Spartans.  Queensbury is the only team from the east to claim a title this year.

The defense for Queensbury was relentless.  Tim Voorhis stopped countless passes, only once getting slapped with a Pass Interference call that was iffy at best.  Erick Wettersten and Brett Rodriguez stopped drives with their fumbles, and Frank Nassivera contributed with sacks and pressure on Ryan Majewski.

All that earns this Queensbury squad the role of the team others will be compared to for years to come.

Queensbury 36, Williamsville North 7

What a ride.

For those who made the 3 hour trek to Central New York, they were able to see quite the defensive game with the Queensbury Spartans making the plays they needed to keep the Williamsville North Spartans at bay, winning the Class A State Title by a score of 36-7.

We'll have more on this game, including press box reflections as the day progresses.  Plus we'll also have some of the highlights of the game as well.

Our full interview with Williamsville North's Mike Mammoliti

Here's Williamsville North Spartans head coach Mike Mammoliti, talking about his team as they have turned their first ever trip to the NYSPHSAA tournament into a trip to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

Like with the John Irion interview, we had to edit some points of this interview due to time constraints.

We have one more interview to share with you, the interview we did with Queensbury Quarterback, Aiden Switzer.  However, that will air in its entirety and will show up on the internet for you to listen to after we play it during our halftime show during the Class A Championship on Friday.

Our full interview with Queensbury head coach John Irion

We visited the head coach of the Queensbury Spartans, John Irion, as he prepares his team for the NYS Class A Football Championship against Williamsville North.

We had to edit down the interview for our on-air broadcast due to time constraints, but for your pleasure, here's the full 6:21 interview.
Tomorrow, on Thanksgiving Day, we'll post our full interview with Williamsville North's head coach Mike Mammoliti.

Brendan Harris wishes Queensbury Football success

This afternoon, I received a direct message from Twitter.

It was from Brendan Harris, 1998 graduate from Queensbury High, who last year played for the Los Angeles Angels and then played for the New York Yankees top affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

I was hoping that Mr. Harris would say a few words of support for the Spartans, and today he delivered the following:
"I've been following your great run. Keep it on the ground, do what got you there. Best of luck, enjoy the moment and bring home the state title"

Things you should know for Syracuse

Heading to Syracuse on Friday to see the Queensbury Spartans play?
Well, first, let's get you acquainted with the route to the Carrier Dome.
There are many routes you can take to get to Syracuse, but the one we took last year and is one of the recommended paths you can take is as follows:
  • Interstate 87 SOUTH to EXIT 15, NY 50 NY 29, Schuylerville/Saratoga Springs.
  • Bear Right at the exit ramp onto Route 50 SOUTH (Saratoga Springs).
  • Proceed on Route 50 (and eventually Route 9) South about 2 miles until you reach Broadway at the four way traffic signal.
  • Continue straight when Routes 9 and 50 goes to the left into Downtown Saratoga Springs, heading towards Route 9N.
  • After passing the hospital, take a left onto West St, passing by the Train Station.
  • Take a right turn onto Route 29 West and continue about 20 miles West until you reach Route 30A in Johnstown.
  • Take a left, following Routes 29 and 30A.  When Route 29 turns right, continue on Route 30A South towards Fonda.
  • Follow Route 30A as it turns onto Route 5, then take a right, following signs for the New York State Thruway.  After crossing the bridge, take a left to head to the Thruway entrance.
  • Enter the Thruway, and proceed onto I-90 West towards Buffalo.
  • Take the Thruway to EXIT 36, I-81 Watertown/Binghamton
  • Exit the Thruway, pay toll ($4.75) and take I-81 SOUTH towards Syracuse/Binghamton
  • After merging onto I-81, look for EXIT 18 HARRISON ST/ADAMS ST, which is just after the massive exits with I-690.  Keep left after exiting to head towards ADAMS ST.  You will be driving underneath I-81 for about a 1/2 mile.  At ADAMS ST., take a left and start looking for signs for the Carrier Dome.
  • A sign will be pointing you to turn RIGHT at IRVING ST.  Do so and continue for about 1/2 mile.  You will see the Carrier Dome on your left, parking will be on your right.
In a nutshell:
  • ENTER the NY Thruway at EXIT 28, and take I-90 WEST to EXIT 36 ($4.75)
  • Take I-81 SOUTH to EXIT 18.  Keep left for ADAMS ST.
  • Take left at ADAMS ST.
  • Take right at IRVING ST.
In addition to these directions, you can take I-87 SOUTH to Exit 12, and take NY Route 67 to Amsterdam, where you will enter the Thruway at EXIT 27.  Take I-90 WEST and follow above directions to Syracuse. [Toll: $5.15]
Or, you can take I-87 to I-90 WEST in Albany by entering at the EXIT 24 toll booth, then follow the above directions to Syracuse.  This requires less turning, but will cost the most [Toll: $6.35]

When you head home, you can save yourself 30 cents and by taking I-690 EAST to I-481 NORTH to I-90 EAST, entering the Thruway at EXIT 34A.  [Toll: to Exit 28 $4.45; 27 $4.85; 24 $6.05].  THIS IS NOT AN OPTION FOR HEADING TO SYRACUSE, AS EXIT 18 COMES BEFORE I-690 MERGES WITH I-81 SOUTH
OTHER COSTS:
PARKING - $10, paid upon entry to lot.
ADMISSION - $10 per person.  Ticket includes admittance to the Class D game at 12:00 noon.
OTHER THINGS TO KNOW:
  • The Class D game between Randolph and Chester is scheduled for 12:00 noon.  When the game is completed, they hand out awards to both teams, similar to how things were done following the Semifinal games at Kingston.  Only after all that is completed will a 30 minute warm-up period begin for the Class A game.  So the game may be advertised for 3:00 p.m., but could start a few minutes later than that if the earlier game runs long.
  • The Queensbury Spartans will be considered the home team for the game on Friday.  Therefore the Spartans will be wearing their home Blues.
  • From Queensbury, it will take approximately THREE HOURS to get to SYRACUSE.  Take that into consideration when planning your trip on Friday.
Have a safe trip and let's show a great support for the Queensbury Spartans on Friday!
And if you can't get to Syracuse, remember we'll have the broadcast live on 1230 FOX Sports Radio beginning at 2:45PM.

Queensbury 36, Cornwall 27 - Reflections from the Press Box

Queensbury's going to the Carrier Dome.

But should they have?

You see, Cornwall was playing even with Queensbury through the 1st and 2nd Quarter.  In fact, the two teams scored on the game's first four drives.  The Green Dragons were driving, getting into Queensbury territory, when disaster struck.

Mike White, who entered the game with nearly 2,400 passing yards and over 20 touchdowns to his credit during the course of the season, dislocated his elbow and had to leave the game after a scrum with the Queensbury defense.

Jason Bailey, who has logged limited snaps during the course of the season, came in as the Sophomore Quarterback.  Two nervous incomplete throws later, the Green Dragons had to punt the ball.

Although the following Queensbury drive came away with no points, you have to think some of the tide had changed once White left the game.

But I wouldn't call that the turning point of the game.  It was huge, but there was another play that was bigger than that.

Following the halftime break, Jason Bailey returned to call the signals for the Green Dragons.  But like with Mike White, the Queensbury defense was struggling against the 5 receiver set.  This, coupled with several on-target screen passes, allowed Jason Bailey to get comfortable in his role, and started rattling off completion after completion.

His work would pay off when Tyler Peddie took the direct snap and ran it in for the touchdown.  The two point conversion would give the Green Dragons the 21-20 lead.

He would continue to move the ball well, getting back into the Red Zone following a Queensbury touchdown, and handed the ball to Moiset Santos who ran it in for the touchdown with 3 minutes left, closing the gap to 28-27.  However, Coach Marcus Hughes was content in going for the lead.  It was a gamble that had a lot of risk, but huge reward if it was successful.

Jason Bailey took the snap, looked to his right, and fired it to Matt Robinson, but he was unable to get the ball as Mitchell Crispins batted it away to preserve the Queensbury lead.

That was the turning point of the game, as with three minutes left, the Spartans could effectively use the run to chew down clock.  With only one timeout in their pocket, a three-and-out would give the Green Dragons about 90 seconds max to execute a game-winning drive.

It would never come to that, as Kody Bruno's run through the line found the opening he needed to reach the end zone, and Brett Rodriguez's two point conversion made it a two-possession game.

Cornwall would drive one last time, but fell short of the end zone.  And the crowd on the far sideline, who made the trek from one Exit 19 to the other Exit 19, celebrated the 36-27 win.

But going back to the early question... should they have?

While you never know how the game would have played out had Mike White stayed in, you have to figure it would have mostly resembled what we saw from Jason Bailey.  The kid was phoenominal in relief, throwing for over 140 yards in a game that would have unrattled most other QB's entering in a pressure situation. The one thing we do know, is that with Jason Bailey in the helm for the next two years, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Cornwall back at Dietz in the years to come.

The one surprise we saw in the game was the underutilization of Chris Bauer, who was the leading reception wide-out for the Cornwall Green Dragons.

Regardless of the events that transpired, it was a great semifinal game, and like the Class A Super Bowl now two weeks ago, there deserved not to be a loser.

NYSPHSAA Football Championship

Well, for the second time in as many years, we're heading to Exit 36 of the New York State Thruway.

We'll be in Syracuse on Black Friday, November 29th, as the Queensbury Spartans will try to do what their equals in 1997 and 1998 couldn't do - claim the state championships.

But Williamsville North is an interesting team.  First, you have to congratulate the Spartans of Section 6 for their success this year.  Especially considering the following:
  • Last year, the Spartans went 3-9
  • Entering the Section 6 title game, they were 6-3 and facing a team that has rattled off 69 straight wins against Section 6 opponents.  And ... oh, yeah, they were the runners-up to Burnt Hills last year.
  • They had never played in the NYSPHSAA Tournament prior to this year.  In fact, they had never played in the Section 6 Championship game prior to this year.
All those things make for a magical season.  But you'd have to admit the Queensbury Spartans are on a magical run of their own, beating last year's state champions twice.

And that's what will make an interesting matchup on Friday.  Can the Queensbury Spartans finally claim the first state title in football in the Tri-County?

Find out Friday beginning at 2:45PM on 1230 FOX Sports Radio.

Week 10: Queensbury 14, Burnt Hills 7

This post is a reflection from the press box, and not a total recap of the game... Thoughts are that of the author himself.

Wow.

18 hours after the play, I'm still stunned.

The Queensbury Spartans had a hard time figuring out how to beat the Burnt Hills Spartans.  Their lone score was defensive, when Christopher Johnson picked up a fumble deep in Queensbury territory, and ran it back 90 yards for the score.

Queensbury was able to get some offense, but once the ball crossed midfield, the Burnt Hills defense clamped down and stopped any progression of the Queensbury running backs.

Aiden Switzer threw.  But it was more trying to break things to open the run.  Brett Rodriguez threw, twice after the first try was called back for holding.

But then the final 4 minutes occurred.

Finally, holes that the Burnt Hills Spartans clogged up opened up.  Queensbury was finding openings.  Runs started adding up.  But Queensbury still had to find the end zone ... they have not once tried a field goal this season and if Queensbury has a field goal kicker, John Irion's keeping it a good secret.

Then came Kody Bruno's 21 yard run with 1:18 left.  He ran to the left, encountered three defenders and faked them out and got them to bite enough that he was able to leap for the pylon for the score.

The Burnt Hills side closest to the press box, stunned.  The Queensbury side, on the Route 146 side of the stadium, roaring loudly.

The play gave the Queensbury Spartans their third Sectional Title, and the first since 1998.  It gave John Irion his third 10-win season in his 17 years of coaching the Spartans, with the first two ending in trips to the Carrier Dome.

Also, the win should give the Queensbury Spartans the top spot of Class A when the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings are unveiled Tuesday afternoon.  Sweet Home, the state's runner-up to Burnt Hills last year, was ranked #1 until they fell to Williamsville-North 21-12 in the Section 6 final Friday night.

Who knows how far this ride will take us.  Last year we had no idea that Glens Falls was going to power their way into the state tournament.  The same this year.  You never know.  But we'll be along for the ride however far Queensbury takes us.

Which means several more trips to Queensbury High School to interview John Irion.

SUPER BOWL WEEKEND: Week 10

It would have been nice to piece together a 30 minute preview for this weekend's quintet of Super Bowl games here in Section 2, but unfortunately, time coupled with a studio that broke this week resulted in a preview that was written down, but never voiced.

No problem.  These notes will be put to good use when we broadcast our second Super Bowl in as many years as the Burnt Hills Spartans and the Queensbury Spartans duke it out for the Class A title Saturday night at 7PM (Broadcast: 6:45PM).

Two games are in the books, with one game being a lot closer than I anticipated, and one being a lot further away than thought.

CLASS AA: CBA Brothers [Albany] (9-1) 13, Shaker Blue Bison (8-2) 8
CBA wins their third Super Bowl in school history with their 13-8 victory over last year's champ, the Shaker Blue Bison.

Joe Kolbe was the player of the game, contributing in both of CBA's touchdowns, as he found Ryan O'Hagan for a 70 yard score to get the scoring started, and then entered the end zone himself in the 2nd Quarter to give the Brothers the lead for good.

It's CBA's first title since 2006, when they defeated Colonie 18-0 for the title.  The Brothers, after a Regional bye, lost to Monroe-Woodbury 21-0 in the only state tournament game the Brothers played in school history (remember, the state tournament has only existed for 20 years).

CBA's next opponent is either Monroe-Woodbury or Newburgh Free Academy.  The two teams will face in the Section 9 Class AA Championship on Saturday night.  That winner will host CBA at Dietz Stadium in Kingston next Saturday, November 16th at 7PM.

CLASS C: Hoosick Falls Panthers (10-0) 21, Chatham Panthers (9-1) 8
The Hoosick Falls Panthers are winners of 50 straight Section 2 games, winners of 5 straight Section 2 titles, and winners of their 26th Section 2 postseason game as they beat the Chatham Panthers 21-8.

Hoosick Falls took advantage of turnovers, scoring on two of Chatham's miscues to propel them back into the state tournament.

Hoosick Falls will play Section 10's Ogdensburg Free Academy, who beat Saranac Lake 27-19.  The two teams will play at Stillwater Central School next Friday, November 15th at 7PM.

---
Two games down, three more to be played.  Super Bowl Weekend continues on Saturday as three more sectional titles are up for grabs.

CLASS D: Cambridge Indians (9-0) vs. Rensselaer Rams (8-1) - 1:00PM at Schuylerville Junior-Senior High School

A rematch of Week 6 is on the agenda when the Indians and the Rams meet under the sunlight at Schuylerville Junior-Senior High School on Saturday.

But it will be a different story this time, as the Rams will have Steven Harwood back.  Harwood played only the first quarter in the first meeting between the two teams before leaving with an injury.

Harwood is a major contributor to the Rams offense, scoring 13 touchdowns on the ground and 20 touchdowns through the air.  His 1,400 passing yards is the best of the remaining quarterbacks in Section 2, and a major reason why Rensselaer trumps most high school programs in the state with a well-balanced run/pass attack, with more passing yards than running yards.

But Cambridge has Ethan English on their side.  English has thrown for over 700 yards, including 151 yards against the Rams back in Week 6.  Caleb Roland and Christopher Warnke will both be players to watch on the ground, helping fuel the Indians offense as they combine for 30 touchdowns.

The winner of this game will travel north to face the Moriah Vikings.  The Section 7 champion shocked the northern tier with their 6-0 win over the Ticonderoga Sentinels, and took care of Tupper Lake to earn the right to play the Section 2 champion up at AuSable Valley next Friday night.

CLASS B: Broadalbin-Perth Patriots (8-1) vs. Schalmont Sabres (9-0) - 3:00PM at Shenendehowa High School

Schalmont's M.O. this season has been to strike early and often.  And keep the opposition from scoring.  It's been a path for success for the Sabres, even in games where Devon Willis was sidelined either due to illness or injury.

However, the team they scored the fewest against is the team that will be facing them in the Class B Super Bowl.

The Broadalbin-Perth Patriots allowed 21 points in their Week 4 loss to Schalmont, but those 21 was the fewest allowed by any team who had to feel the brunt of the Sabres.  Plus, the Patriots remember what happened to Schalmont last year.

It's a recipe that could play into the Patriots favor, who are playing in their first Super Bowl in school history.

Zach Morreale calls the signals for the Patriots, with several options.  Andre Taylor, Darius Reyes and Luigi Magliocca are just a few of the options.  No player on the Patriots team shouts "Sectional Leader" on the stats sheet, but as a team, they contribute for wins.  And the defense has come up big for the Patriots, seizing control in their semifinal against the Cohoes Tigers thanks to interceptions.

But will it be enough to overcome Nick Gallo, Devon Willis and the rest of the Schalmont Sabres?  No team has put up more than 8 points against the Sabres, allowing only 24 points all season long.  It's a big reason why they have reassured themselves as the team to beat in Class B.  With a 2:1 run-to-pass ratio, the Sabres will make sure defenses keep having to guess what the Sabres will throw at them next.

And Schalmont remembers.  It's all they've been hearing about the past 53 weeks.

CLASS A: Queensbury Spartans (9-0) vs. Burnt Hills Spartans (8-1) - 7:00PM at Shenendehowa High School

In a way, you have to think Queensbury feels like Glens Falls of last year.

They may have the better record, and are better ranked in the state, but it's the Burnt Hills Spartans who many are picking to win the final Super Bowl match of the year.

A lot of that comes down to how the first meeting ended.

A missed extra point turned what could have been overtime for the two teams into a Queensbury win, surviving a 14 point deficit against what was the #1 team in the state at that time and winning 28-27.  Head coach John Irion noted that when Burnt Hills scored the touchdown, his plan turned into what they were going to do in the overtime session.

Yet, it never happened.  Queensbury used that game to propel them into the #1 seed, which came up huge last week as Queensbury used their home advantage last week against the Amsterdam Rugged Rams, putting a season-high 59 points on the board and were comfortably able to swap out their starters for backups in the 4th Quarter.  Burnt Hills, on the other hand, had to travel to Troy and play a full 48 minute game, surviving a surge by the Flying Horses in their 24-19 win.

Burnt Hills has a strong run attack, but they help aid it with a passing game.  Josh Quesada will be a marked man by the Queensbury defense, accounting for 22 trips to the end zone for the B-Spartans.  Daniel Maynard has become more of a runner as the season progressed, chewing up 135 yards on the ground last week against Troy.  Maynard's transition to a runner comes thanks to John Clayton's growth as a quarterback.  Clayton's first varsity game came against Queensbury, and it's safe to say that Clayton has developed since that game.

Queensbury stopped the run attack of Burnt Hills in the first meeting, but might need to watch Clayton's arm in this game.  Queensbury has a strong defense, coming up big when they needed a stop, but has also been open to short pass gains, especially in hurry-up situations.

Queensbury's offense is heavy on the run.  The run outgains their pass by a 24:1 ratio, offering teams little surprise to what the Spartans will do on offense.  However, what usually makes things difficult for the opposition is knowing who will carry the ball.  Queensbury works in the double-wing, and regularly executes double hand-offs before pushing through the line into the secondary.  If that wasn't enough, the Spartans also have 6 regular ball carriers.  Brett Rodriguez will see some carries, but too will Kody Bruno, Phil Wettersten, Kalen Minot, Tim Voorhis and Chris Goudy.  The many back options is a big reason why the Spartans do not have a player over 1,000 yards.

This game could easily turn into a shootout.  But it could also turn into one of the legendary games that gets included in The Post Star's list compiled by Pete Tobey.

Week 9: Sectional Semifinal Saturday (updated w/finals)

Good Day!

The sun's shining, for now, as clouds may be rolling in from the northwest with some passing showers.  But it's another football Saturday in the Section, as 12 teams battle for 6 spots in next week's Super Bowl.

Refresh this post throughout the day as we'll try to keep you updated as much as possible on the games being played on this Sectional Semifinal Saturday.  Updates may be limited during the afternoon while we're live at the Amsterdam/Queensbury game, however.

To the right of each game are Twitter handles that you can follow for updates.

Week 8: Sectional Quarterfinals in Review

Players line up before a play during Saturday's
Bishop Maginn/Queensbury game - WMML photo
Week 8 of the High School season brought little surprise.  It brought some drama.

More importantly, they gave us an indication of how the remainder of the playoffs could go.

And if it's anything like the ending of the Shenendehowa/Shaker or Guilderland/Colonie games, we're in for a wild ride.

After the jump, a recap of last week and a quick analysis as we approach the Sectional Semifinals this weekend.

Football Sectionals: Comparison from Last Year

Parity is the spice of life, they say.

Being able to rebound from an off-year to make the playoffs the next is an example of this.  But is this true when it comes to the Section 2 Sectionals?

Granted you will always have the perennial powers, like Cambridge, who has made Sectionals 19 straight years, and the same for Glens Falls, who narrowly continued their consecutive streak which now sits at 15 straight years.

Let's compare this year's field with last year's.  This year's new teams are in bold, last year's teams who failed to make it back are in italics.

CLASS AA
This Year's Field:
Empire Division
This Year's Field: E1-CBA, E2-Saratoga Springs, E3-Guilderland, E4-Shenendehowa
Last Year's Field: E1-Shenendehowa, E2-CBA, E3-Guilderland, E4-Ballston Spa
Liberty Division
This Year's Field: L1-Shaker, L2-Colonie, L3-LaSalle, L4-Columbia
Last Year's Field: L1-Shaker, L2-Columbia, L3-Schenectady, L4-Colonie

CLASS A
Northwest Division
This Year's Field: NW1-Queensbury, NW2-Burnt Hills, NW3-Amsterdam, NW4-Gloversville
Last Year's Field: NW1-Burnt Hills, NW2-Amsterdam, NW3-Queensbury, NW4-Gloversville

With 4 of the 5 teams in the division making the playoffs, it's no surprise that the four teams making it this year are the same four that made it last year.  The only difference is Queensbury's rise from third to first in the division.

Southeast Division
This Year's Field: SE1-Troy, SE2-Averill Park, SE3-Mohonasen, SE4-Bishop Maginn
Last Year's Field: SE1-Troy, SE2-Scotia, SE3-Averill Park, SE4-Mohonasen

Scotia's demotion from A to B paved the way for Bishop Maginn to make the field of 4 for the Southeast.

CLASS B
West
This Year's Field: W1-Schalmont, W2-Broadalbin-Perth, W3-Scotia, W4-Glens Falls
Last Year's Field: W1-Schalmont, W2-Glens Falls, W3-Broadalbin-Perth, W4-Schuylerville

It was wild and came down to the last day of games, but what we saw was that Scotia's entry into B resulted in them substituting Schuylerville in the field.  Though, had the final night gone differently, we would have seen one new team in the playoffs, either Cobleskill or Johnstown.

Reinfurt
This Year's Field: R1-Cohoes, R2-Ravena, R3-Lansingburgh, R4-Green Tech
Last Year's Field: R1-Lansingburgh, R2-Ravena, R3-Albany Academy, R4-Ichabod Crane

It's a big turnaround for the Tigers, coming from failing to make the playoffs last year to being the top dog in the Reinfurt.  And Green Tech finally finds their groove as they drive their way into the final seed.  Albany Academy was in the race until the final week, having lost a game that was a "Win-and-you're-in".  Ichabod Crane had a tough go this year.

CLASS C
North
This Year's Field: N1-Hoosick Falls, N2-Corinth, N3-Stillwater, N4-Mechanicville
Last Year's Field: N1-Hoosick Falls, N2-Mechanicville, N3-Tamarac, N4-Stillwater

Had Granville won the tiebreaker as we originally thought, they would have made two new teams in the C playoffs, but this year's new blood is a team that has gained a lot of respect from the fans and media alike.  The Tomahawks weren't pegged to be a home-field bearer, live alone getting a playoff berth, but here they are.

South
This Year's Field: S1-Chatham, S2-Fonda, S3-Voorheesville, S4-Watervliet
Last Year's Field: S1-Chatham, S2-Fonda, S3-Watervliet, S4-Voorheesville

So nothing much changes in the South. Just a flip between Voorheesville and Watervliet.

CLASS D
North
This Year's Field: N1-Greenwich, N2-Salem, N3-Warrensburg, N4-Whitehall
Last Year's Field: N1-Whitehall, N2-Salem

This is comparing apples to oranges, as this year there's a three-round playoff structure in Class D, and also the swap of Greenwich from the South to the North.

South
This Year's Field: S1-Cambridge, S2-Rennselaer, S3-Canajoharie, S4-Schoburg
Last Year's Field: S1-Cambridge, S2-Rennselaer

Same here.  All that changed is that the structure allowed for two new teams to make the playoffs.  Schoburg, in their first year of full Varsity, makes the playoffs after Bishop Gibbons declined the seeding.

Major Games: Ravena at Green Tech - Lansingburgh's win clinches Green Tech's trip to the playoffs, but a win will force a three-way tie.  Lansingburgh earned 5 Quarter Points in the victory tonight, meaning Green Tech can still clinch a #2 seed if they beat Ravena leading throughout the entire game.
