Quick Hits: Tuesday, June 24th

YANKEES
The Toronto Blue Jays score six in the second inning, capped by Adam Lind's three-run home run, as they beat the New York Yankees 8-3.

Chase Whitley gave up all eight runs in only 3 1/3rd innings pitched, as he was dealt his first loss of the season.  Mark Teixeria had a solo home run in the fourth inning.

David Phelps will try to turn the tide tonight for the Yankees, who have lost three straight.  He'll opposite Mark Buehrle for the Blue Jays.

METS
The Mets had a night off on Monday, but announced the return of Travis d'Arnaud.

d'Arnaud is expected to play tonight as the Mets begin a quick two-game interleague series against the Oakland Athletics.  The A's come into town with the best record in baseball, and will have former Met 1st Round pick Scott Kazmir on the mound.

Kazmir has won the last three straight starts, including a seven inning affair on Thursday when he punched out eight Red Sox on the A's way to a 4-2 victory.

Bartolo Colon will take the mound for the Mets.  In his last start, Colon started what has become a part of the clubhouse culture for the Mets - the towel rally wave.  Mets players were seen waving those towels when Colon belted out a hit down the left field line in his last start in St. Louis for his first base hit since 2005.  He would later score the tying run that helped lift the Mets to victory over the Cardinals.

It will be Zack Wheeler on the mound for the Mets on Wednesday, facing $1 man Brad Mills for the A's.

RED SOX
Felix Hernandez gets the run support he needs as the Seattle Mariners explode to a 12-3 win over the Boston Red Sox.

The Mariners used a six-run fourth inning to take the lead from the Red Sox for good, chasing starter John Lackey from the game after 3 2/3rds.  He got tagged for seven runs, all earned, and Chris Capuano surrendered five runs.

Hernandez pitched seven innings, only giving up two runs while striking out six.

FLAMES
In case you missed it, the Adirondack Flames have a new coach.

Ryan Huska was announced during a press conference in Calgary on Monday to be the first leader of the Adirondack Flames.  Huska comes from the Kelowna Rockets, where he led them to a franchise best 57-11-4 record last year.

Read more about his hiring here.

MISCELLANEOUS
Breaking this morning, LeBron James has opted out of his deal with the Miami Heat, making him a free agent.

And the Glens Falls Golden Eagles three game win streak is over after they fall to the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dogs 12-6.  They travel to Amsterdam tonight to face the league's hottest team, the Amsterdam Mohawks.  The Mohawks extended their win streak to nine last night, bouncing back from a 2-6 start.

2013 in Review

Oh, what an exciting 2013 it was.  Both on the local scene and on the national stage, there were plenty of memories that will not expire as the calendar turns at Midnight.

The Forgettable

Florida Gators Block Each Other:
It was a forgettable year for Florida Gator football.  But, unfortunately, because of this play, the Gators mishaps in the 2013 season will take a long time to forget.  Voted as "Worst-of-the-Worst" on that cable sports channel for weeks after the play occurred, the offensive linemen involved will never live this down.

Who Wants to Catch This Fly Ball?
Zack Wheeler's second career start was less memorable than the first, but he was let off the hook after this zany play where Daniel Murphy should have been out on a fly ball.  The dropped ball gave the Mets life, but Murphy was left stranded.  Chicago would win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning on a solo walk-off homer.

New York Professional Football

It was a forgettable year for professional football in New York.  The two New Jersey teams saw their seasons end without fanfare, as the Giants kicked off the season with six straight losses.  They won five of their next six as they returned to playoff contention in an NFC East where nobody wanted to take a commanding lead, but then back-to-back teams against West Coast teams nailed the coffin shut on their season.

The Jets season began with news that Mark Sanchez would miss a part of the season with a shoulder injury sustained in their preseason game against the New York Giants. This led to Geno Smith being the Jets prime starting QB, and the rookie's inconsistency led to inconsistent results for the Jets, who couldn't win back-to-back games until the final two games of the season.

Like the Jets, the Buffalo Bills started a newly-drafted Quarterback for much of the season in EJ Manuel.  But Manuel's season consisted of three knee injuries, one that took him out of the final two preseason games and made him an uncertainty for the opening game against the New England Patriots, a second during the Thursday Night Football game against the Cleveland  Browns, and a third towards the end of the season.  There were moments where the Bills showed signs of defeating their playoff-less streak, but by the end, the Bills defaulted to old ways, missing the playoffs and finishing last in the AFC East.

Boston Marathon Bombing
On Monday, April 15th, the world was watching Boston as the traditional Patriots Day marathon took place down the city streets.  By 3PM, the world's reason for watching Boston changed after explosions rocked near the finish line.

No longer was it about the race.  It was about finding out who did this, and why.  By that Friday night, that search concluded as police picked up their suspect alive.

The Memorable

Boston Strong:

One of the most forgettable moments of 2013 led to one of the most memorable moments.  Two days after the 2013 Marathon Bombing, the first sporting event to be held in the city of Boston after the attack led to the crowd consuming Rene Rancourt and taking over the singing of the National Anthem before the Boston Bruins home game against the Buffalo Sabres.

It was one of the best crowd performances of the National Anthem, performed in front of a national stage.

From NESN - PARENTAL ADVISORY NOTE: Contains the uncensored profanity.

Three days later, Boston Red Sox's David Ortiz brought another memorable moment post-bombing as he spoke to the crowd during a pregame commemoration, and during his heart-felt speech let out an obscenity live on the air.

Perhaps using the Boston Strong to inspire them, the Boston Red Sox would win the AL East pennant, and then finished off the season with a 4-2 series win against the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series.

42

It was the farewell tour this season for the last player to done the jersey number 42, Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera.  Through his farewell tour, teams gave him gifts, crowds gave him standing ovations, but one of the best was in the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field when Jim Leyland, not wanting to risk the National League coming from behind to take the lead and voiding any opportunity for Rivera to make it out onto the field, sent Rivera out for the 8th inning following Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline".  Three things made this special: The crowd, the television crew at FOX for letting this air raw without any commentary or graphic, sans the "bug" on the top right corner, and the outpouring of support from players and managers alike.

Section 2: Title Town

How do you top a year where three teams make it to Syracuse's Carrier Dome and two of them win the state championship in Football?  How about a year where FOUR Section 2 teams carry home State Basketball titles (Troy girls, Watervliet, Lake George and Argyle boys), and Section 2 hockey team wins the State Division 1 Hockey championship (Saratoga Springs).  Fort Ann sweeping the baseball and softball titles in Class D, and the Queensbury Spartans coming close, falling in Binghamton in their title chance.  Then in the fall, Burnt Hills came to Glens Falls in an attempt to obtain a Volleyball title, and the Queensbury Cross Country team.  It all culminated in the Queensbury Spartans football team doing something no other team in the local tri-county area had done before, win the state championship in football, and did so in commanding fashion, winning 36-7 over Williamsville North.

Midday Recap - Harvey ND'd again, Giants fall flat

Matt Harvey gets another no decision. The Giants falter against the Colts. And the Bills may have figured out their week 1 starter. Only 1 problem.

But the big story is the bean heard around the world in Beantown last night.

Ryan Dempster took exception to Alex Rodriguez playing under appeal of his suspension and in the 2nd inning, delivered his first offering to A-Rod way inside, nearly plunking the 3rd baseman. The 2nd and 3rd pitches to A-Rod also were inside, but not as close. But the 4th pitch came inside and plunked A-Rod below the elbow.

A-Rod was displeased, but more displeased was Skipper Joe Girardi about Dempster only getting a warning instead of an ejection on what he saw was a blatant bean.  A fired up Girardi caused the benches to clear, fueling up a rivalry that hasn't been much to talk about otherwise this year.

After the plunked Rod, all eyes were on C.C. Sabathia to see if he would retaliate and hit a batter, but through 6 1/3rd innings, he did not.

The Yankees would go on to win the game 9-6 as Sabathia earned his 11th win of the season.  Ryan Dempster was charged with his 9th loss of the year.

Boston Pride: Fans at Fenway Park did give an ovation to Mariano Rivera as he walked out onto the field in the middle of the 9th inning, before earning his 36th save of the season.

AGAIN
Matt Harvey remains at 9-4 for the year after a no-decision start on Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

Things were going well for Harvey until the 5th inning, when he started the inning by plunking Logan Forsythe on the first pitch, and then surrendered a single by Nick Hundley.  Both would be brought home to tie the score at 2-2.

Then in the 6th inning, a single to Jedd Gyorko started the inning.  He would be stranded, however, after Logan Forsythe grounded out.

That would be all for Harvey, as after a two-out double by Omar Quintanilla, Terry Collins decided to pinch-hit for the pitcher, sending Andrew Brown to the plate.  That move proved to be good when Brown doubled home Quintanilla for the go-ahead run, putting Harvey back in line for the win.

But that wouldn't last, as Gonzalez Germen would get into trouble, surrendering a walk to Yonder Alonso.  Chase Headley doubled to right, but the strong arm of Marlon Byrd kept Alonso at 3rd until Chris Denorfia singled him home.

After a scoreless top 9th, and Pedro Feliciano on the mound for the Mets, Will Venable took a 1-2 slider deep for the Mets 12th walk-off loss of the year, as the Padres won the back 2 games to split the four game series.

Fly like a Byrd: Marlon Byrd came within inches of extending the Mets lead in the 8th inning when he crushed a ball to deep center.  However, a jumping grab by game-winner Will Venable at the wall brought the 2nd out of the inning.  It was a close call, as the downward trajectory of the ball would possibly have clipped the top of the wall.

Infield Singles: The Mets surrendered three infield singles during the game.  Two of those three brought men home, as Venable's soft grounder to Justin Turner in the 5th allowed Forsythe to score and Nick Hundley to move over to 3rd, where he would be brought home with the next batter's sac-fly.  Then in the 8th, Denorfia's single to Quintanilla brought home Alonso to tie the game once again.

Walk it Off: The Mets are now 31-34 on the road, with 12 of those losses of the walk-off variety. The 12 walk-off losses this season ties them for the most in the majors with the Miami Marlins.

Detour: The Mets have a detour on their way home from the west coast as they play a make-up game against the Minnesota Twins. There will be friendlier weather for the Mets this time at Target Field as the high is forecasted to reach 90, a considerable difference from the snowy conditions that brought about the postponement back in April.  Dillon Gee will start for the Mets, and Kyle Gibson gets the nod for the Twins. Pregame Coverage: 1:30PM on 1230 FOX Sports Radio

GIANT FAIL
The Giants lead, but cannot stay ahead as the New York Giants lose to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night.

FOX Sports - Image Source
The Giants took the lead on a Josh Brown 25 yard field goal.  But four minutes was all it took for the Colts to seize control of the lead with Andrew Luck's pass to Reggie Wayne for the 28 yard touchdown reception.  Adam Vinatieri showed he has kicking power still at the end of the first quarter, as he booted a 52 yard field goal for the 10-3 Indy lead.

In the 2nd quarter, the Colts got a 18 yard touchdown reception as Luck and T.Y. Hilton combine efforts.  But two Josh Brown field goals would move the Giants back within a possession at the end of the half.

Both teams would trade a field goal in the 2nd half, and the Giants would go down 20-12.

Sacked Pack: Eli Manning went 8-for-17 for 91 yards, including a pick as he obtained a 39.1 QB rating in the game.  The other two on the Giants depth chart weren't much better - David Carr's 7/11 was better, but 3 sacks helped shut down drives fast.  Ryan Nassib's 2 sacks didn't help either, combined with his 2/6 passing.

Mellow Yellow: So if through most of the stats, the Giants were equal to the Colts, how did they lose the game?  Negative yardage could be a reason.  44 yards lost to sacks and the 10 yellow flags that accounted for 96 penalty yards did not help the G-men.

SIDELINED
After looking nearly unstoppable in the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, it appeared as if the 1st round draft pick was going to be named the Buffalo Bills starter for the 1st regular season matchup against the New England Patriots.

After all, EJ Manuel went 10/12 in the 3rd quarter, passing for 92 yards as his arm helped lift the Buffalo Bills to victory over the Minnesota Vikings, 20-16.

However, Saturday, it was learned that EJ Manuel will be sidelined for the remainder of the preseason, there is some swelling going on with his knee that needs to be looked at, and that Kevin Kolb will be getting the start in the 3rd preseason game against the Washington Redskins [4:30PM, 1410 CBS Sports Radio WENU].

At this time, Manuel should be back with the Bills in time for the regular season.

Midday Recap: Wheeler wheels and deals into the 7th, Whitney field drawn

Another game, another walkoff for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Meanwhile, their AL counterparts have a wild game in Texas.  Jake Peavy's heading from one Sox to another.  And today's the draw for the Whitney.

But the big story this morning is Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler, and his flirtation with a no-hitter last night.  For 6 innings, Wheeler looked good as he kept the Marlins at bay, allowing only two base runners by way of walks.  After getting Giancarlo Stanton to strike out, Wheeler then gave up a walk to Logan Morrison, then Ed Lucas broke up the no-hit bid with a single to right, as four straight Marlins reached base as they plated two runs to tie the game.  But after a visit to the mound by the Mets pitching coach, Wheeler returned his focus and got Jeff Mathis to ground into a double play, allowing him to escape the inning.

But those two runs yielded a no-decision for Wheeler.  Marlon Byrd tripled to lead-off the 8th, but was stranded after Ike Davis struck out, John Buck grounded to 3rd to keep Byrd where he was, and Omar Quintanilla struck out after a Juan Lagares walk.

After a scoreless 9th, David Wright led off the 10th with a single, and Marlon Byrd singled after Giancarlo Stanton was unable to scoop in the ball on a diving play.  Ike Davis walked to load the bases, and John Buck made up for his ground out in the 8th with a 2-run single to center field.

So armed with a two run lead, Bobby Parnell made things a little easier for Mets fans by getting the first two hitters to ground out.  But a walk to Christian Yelich allowed the tying run to come to the plate.  Not tonight, Marlins fans, as Yelich would be stranded on a Adeiny Hechavarria ground out.

Wheeler only needed 87 pitches to get through his 7 innings of work, in which he struck out 5 and walked 3.  The two runs he allowed on three hits brought his season's ERA to 3.55.

SAME OL', DIFFERENT DAY
For the 2nd straight game, both the Yankees and the Dodgers were involved in walk-offs.  For the Yankees, however, they were the victim of one as the Los Angeles Dodgers walked-off in the 9th inning off a Mark Ellis single.

Tied 2-2 in the 9th inning, Andre Ethier singled to left.  Then as Mark Ellis was batting, Ethier put himself closer as he steals 2nd base.  Then on a 3-2 count with 2 men out, Shawn Kelley delivered a slider that Ellis got a piece of.  Kelley delivered another slider, which Ellis got enough of to drive to center, scoring Ethier to win the game.

The Dodgers walked off against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday when Yasiel Puig homered in the 11th inning to break a scoreless tie.  Earlier in the day, the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays when Alfonso Soriano singled to win their game in the bottom of the 9th inning.

WEARING OUT HOME PLATE
The Los Angeles Angels and the Texas Rangers combine for 25 total runs as the two teams duke it out until the 10th inning.

The scoring started early as Mark Trumbo homers to center field, scoring Mike Trout for the 2-0 Los Angeles lead.  But Texas struck back, scoring on an Ian Kinsler single and tying the game on a Nelson Cruz single.

Mike Trout would get the Angels back on top with a single to left to score Erick Aybar for the 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 3rd.  But Los Angeles was unable to maintain the lead, as C.J. Wilson got into trouble, and further caused more trouble when his wild pitch scored Nelson Cruz.  Craig Gentry would give Texas the lead, 5-3, with his 2-run single.

After Adrian Beltre singled to widen the gap to 6-3, former Met Collin Cowgill homered to lead off the Los Angeles 5th, pulling the Angels back within two.

Then in the 7th inning, Josh Hamilton unloaded the bases with a 3-run double to give the Angels a  7-6 lead.  But Texas answers back with Elvis Andrus's single, tying the game at 7-7.

Los Angeles would take the lead again in the 8th inning as Erick Aybar grounds out, allowing Kole Calhoun to score.  Howie Kendrick brings home J.B. Shuck and Collin Cowgill, and Mike Trout comes home on a Josh Hamilton single.  The four run inning made the score 11-7, but it wouldn't last as Geovany Soto hit a 3-run homer in the 8th inning to pull Texas within 1, then with two outs in the 9th, Adrian Beltre singled home Ian Kinsler to tie the game and to force extra innings.

After a scoreless top half, the Angels walked the first two Rangers, who advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a David Murphy ground-out.  But their position didn't matter as Leonys Martin brought everyone home with his 6th of the season, giving the Rangers the 14-11 win in 10 innings.

The two teams combined for 35 hits.  Every batter for Texas touched the bases, as the only one who didn't have a hit, Engle Beltre, came in to run for Nelson Cruz in the 8th inning.

14 pitchers in all were used.

TRADING SOX
In a three-team trade, Chicago White Sox Jake Peavy is changing his socks to those of the Boston Red Sox.  In the deal announced late last night, Peavy will head to Boston, who will send Jose Iglesias to the Detroit Tigers, who will in turn send Avisail Garcia to the White Sox.

In 13 games this season, Peavy is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA.  He's struck out 76 and granted 18 free passes via 17 walks and 1 hit batter.  Against the Mets in May, Peavy went 6 2/3rd innings, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 6 as he allowed one lone run in the winning decision.

Peavy has spent some time in June and early July on the disabled list with a rib injury, but has won his two starts since his return.

WHITNEY DRAWING
And finally, post positions have been drawn for this Saturday's Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.  A field of 8 is set to run in the 86th running of the midsummer prep for the Breeder's Cup Classic.

In post position order:

Midday Recap: Leapfrogging - Mets and Marlins play some, so too does Boston and Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay Rays take advantage of a botched call to leapfrog past the Red Sox in the AL East.  And E.J. Manuel is already wowing the brass in Buffalo.

Associated Press
But the big story today is the 7th inning comeback the Mets exhibited against the Miami Marlins on Monday to win only their 4th game against the Marlins in 12 starts.

The 7th inning comeback started with Eric Young doubling off new pitcher Mike Dunn.  He was brought home by Daniel Murphy, who singled to center.  Daniel Murphy took advantage of a stolen base and a wild pitch to get him to 3rd base.  Then Marlon Byrd, who has been talked about more as the trade deadline approaches, took a 3-2 count to center field to bring Murphy home, tying the game.  Then Ike Davis brought a ball down the right field line that allowed Marlon Byrd to circle the bases to home, where he just beat the tag of catcher Jeff Mathis.

The comeback helped erase the loss that Jeremy Hefner would have taken for his 5 1/3rd innings of work where he allowed 5 runs on 4 hits, three of them earned.  He struck out only 4 while walking 5.  Bobby Parnell saved the game, but with tense moments as he got Giancarlo Stanton to ground to 2nd with runners on the corners for the final out.

LEAPFROG
With the latest surge of the Tampa Bay Rays, any series against the Boston Red Sox grows in importance as first place in the AL East with two months left to play hangs in the balance. But it was a botched call that helped allow the Tampa Bay Rays move back into first a day after Boston reclaimed the top spot.

In the 8th inning, with Tampa Bay leading 2-1, Boston gets runners on 2nd and 3rd after Stephen Drew doubles with one man out.  With Daniel Nava at 3rd, Brandon Snyder flies out to left, who then tosses it over to the catcher trying to beat Nava home.  Jose Molina tagged Nava out for the 3rd out according to Home Plate Umpire Jerry Meals.  The call would be argued by Red Sox skipper John Farrell, who would be ejected.

However, replays showed that Farrell's argument was the correct call, as Nava was able to slide into home plate before Molina's tag.  Jerry Meals would later admit that he botched the call, as he thought Nava's foot was elevated, therefore not touching the plate before the tag.

Tampa Bay would hang on to win 2-1, gaining a 1/2 game lead over Boston for the AL East.

THE IT FACTOR
It didn't take long for Buffalo Bills General Manager Doug Whaley to like what he saw from 1st Round draft pick E.J. Manuel.   In an interview with media after practices Monday afternoon, Whaley described Manuel as having the "it" factor.

The "it", in this case, refers to the distinct possibility that Manuel will be taking the first snap from center on September 8th against the New England Patriots. But before Manuel can assume the role of their starter come Week 1, the Buffalo Bills will be putting more and more pressure on him in practice situations as camp progresses.

Manuel will get a taste of what it's going to be like when he, and the Bills, start their preseason schedule on August 11th against the Indianapolis Colts.

Midday Recap: Carlos Torres rebounds from his 2nd pitch, Jagr on the move

Boston slows down a hot charging Tampa Bay team.  Jaromir Jagr takes his talents down I-95.  And San Francisco and the Cincinnati play a doubleheader of unusual nature.

Howard Simmons | New York Daily News
But the big story this morning is Carlos Torres's 2nd start for the New York Mets.  Torres started by allowing a solo shot by lead-off hitter Andrelton Simmons, but then calmed down to keep the Braves at one run through his 6 innings of work.

The bullpen kept the Braves bats quiet, failing to allow a hit through their three innings of work.  Bobby Parnell, who blew a save in the Mets 2-1 loss on Monday, struck out two as he earned his 19th save of the season.

Ike Davis helped the Mets earn Torres his first win of the season thanks to his double in the 6th inning that scored Daniel Murphy to give the Mets the 2-1 lead, and the force was with John Buck as he brought Marlon Byrd home to widen the gap.  A Juan Lagares sac-fly would bring the final score of 4-1.

The Braves scored 1 run on 7 hits, all against Torres.  Torres struck out 6 and walked 2 as the one earned run he allowed boosted his ERA to 0.94.  Ike Davis, who earned boos after his first two at bats, drove in cheers thanks to his go-ahead double in the 6th.

For Braves starting pitcher Kris Medlen, it was his third loss in a row.  Allowing 14 runs in his last three starts, Medlen's spot in the starting rotation is in jeopardy.  He's allowed 24 hits and struck out 13 during this three game span, and in all three games, he had to be replaced prior to the end of an inning.

On-Deck: Jeremy Hefner came back from the All-Star break with a dud in his last start against the Philadelphia Phillies.  Touting one of the best ERA's since the start of June, Hefner got torched for 8 runs on 10 hits as his season's ERA rose 0.60 after the Friday effort.  If Hefner can return to the form he had prior to the All-Star break, the Mets stand a chance of climbing back to within 9 games of the Braves in the NL East.

It hasn't been pretty, but Tim Hudson is a winner of his last three starts.  Allowing 8 runs on 23 hits in the three-game span, Hudson has struck out 13 as the Braves offered him some run support to overcome those deficits.

Game Coverage: 6:30PM on 1230 FOX Sports Radio

Mar-GONE
Jim McIssac | Newsday
The New York Mets begin proceedings to release pitcher Shaun Marcum from their roster.  Yesterday, prior to their game against the Braves, the Mets placed Marcum on waivers with the intent of an unconditional release from their roster.  Marcum was shelved from the lineup a couple weeks ago with a thoratic outlet syndrome that required season-ending surgery.

Marcum went 1-10 this year with a 5.29 ERA, with his lone win being at the Chicago White Sox in June.  Marcum had a season-high 12 strikeouts against the Atlanta Braves on national television, but had consistency issues throughout the season.

ROADBLOCK
The Tampa Bay Rays fail to convert on an opportunity to do what the Los Angeles Dodgers accomplished the previous night.  In their way was the Boston Red Sox, who kept firm control of 1st place in the AL East with their 6-2 win last night in Boston.

Heading into the game, the Rays were winners of 6 straight and 9 of their last 10.  And down 3-2, the Rays had the opportunity to tie the game after Jose Molina doubled with one man out.  However, the Rays were unable to move the runner over, and was stranded at 2nd after Junichi Tazawa got Desmond Jennings to strike out to end the 7th.

The Red Sox would pad their lead with three in the 8th inning, pushing the Rays back to 1 1/2 games behind the Red Sox for the lead in the AL East.

GOING DOWN I-95
USA Today Sports
Jaromir Jagr is heading down the Atlantic.  The Boston Bruin has signed a 1 year contract, worth $2 million, to play for the New Jersey Devils.  The signing replaces the hole that came when Ilya Kovalchuk retired from the NHL to play hockey in Russia.

Last year Jagr scored 16 goals and 19 assists with the Boston Bruins and the Dallas Stars.  Those 16 goals would have led the Devils, and his 35 points would put him one point behind team leader Patrik Elias.

UNUSUAL DOUBLEHEADER
It was an unusual doubleheader for the San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.  In the first game, the Reds prevailed 9-3.  Following the game, both teams changed jerseys, with the Giants wearing the road colors and batting first, and the Reds treated as the home team, despite the game being played at AT&T Park in San Francisco.  In the nightcap, the Giants, as the road team, prevailed 5-3.

The weird doubleheader came about after rain postponed the Giants/Reds game on July 4th in Cincinnati.  After the two teams had a tough time rescheduling the game for its home field in Cincinnati, the two teams came to terms on the doubleheader in San Francisco.

Midday Recap: Mets, Blackhawks and More

Mets Coverage: Mets build, maintain in win over Cardinals
Stanley Cup Coverage: Blackhawks survive penalties, close calls, to take 1-0 series lead

HOMER-LESS YANKS
The New York Yankees have gone five games without a homer and Phil Hughes loses his 5th of the season as the Yankees lose to the Oakland Athletics 5-2.

Hughes lasted 4 1/3rd innings as the A's scored three runs on four hits against him, and earned five walks against the Yankees pitcher.  Ichiro Suzuki was the only Yankee to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 for the game.

The two teams meet in the final game of the series this afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 3:35PM.

NAVA-GATE

Daniel Nava helped navigate the Boston Red Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.  His 9th of the year, and first since June 1st against the Yankees, gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning as Alfredo Aceves wins his third win of the season.

Evan Longoria plated the lone run for the Rays with his 13th of the season.  Longoria takes a three game homer streak with him into tonight's opener of a four game series against the Kansas City Royals, having hit a homer in all three games against the Red Sox.  Longoria has 6 homers against the Royals in 31 career games.

BULL--
Armed with a 4-3 lead in the 7th inning, Chris Withrow gives up three straight singles as the Diamondbacks tied their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, one night after the two teams made headlines for their bench-clearing brawl.

After four scoreless innings, the Diamondbacks caused trouble in the top 12th as Ronald Belisario gave up a double and a single to set up Martin Prado's ground-rule double that brought Cody Ross home.  Three more runs later, the Dodgers were faced with a 8-4 hole entering the bottom of the 12th.

Depsite Ramon Hernandez and Mark Ellis's efforts, the Dodgers were only able to cover half of the runs needed as the bullpen costs the Dodgers another game, losing 8-6.  The bullpen has now accounted for 15 losses, which ties them with the Houston Astros for most bullpen losses this season.

NO MORE RIDES
Ramon Dominguez announced today via press release that he will no longer ride again.  The Saratoga Race Course regular sustained career-ending injuries in an accident at Aqueduct back in January.

Dominguez earned two racing titles at Saratoga Race Course during his career.  Although Dominguez never won a Triple Crown race, he did win three Breeder's Cup races, including last year when he rode Little Mike to victory in the Breeder's Cup Turf.

JASON LEFFLER (1975-2013)
Sad day in auto racing as Jason Leffler died an accident at a dirt track in New Jersey Wednesday night.  Leffler.  The two-time Nationwide Series race winner was racing in a higher-profile sprint car race at Bridgeport Speedway, south of Philadelphia.

New Jersey State Police are investigating the deadly crash.

Midday Recap: Parn-hell, Big Teix and a Grimm Night

Bobby Parnell blows save, Nats walk off on fly ball.

It took only 8 pitches for Bobby Parnell to blow the save last night against the Washington Nationals.  11 pitches later, Parnell was staring down the wrong end of a Nationals walk-off as Steve Lombardozzi drove in the winning run through a sac-fly to left field.

It wrecks what should have been Jeremy Hefner's 2nd win of the season.  Hefner allowed only 4 hits, as his only blemish was a solo shot from Ian Desmond in the 2nd inning.  He struck out 7 in his 7 innings pitched, and has seen his ERA improve from the high of 7.20 when he pitched in relief in Colorado and gave up two home runs, to the better looking 4.36 it sits after yesterday's game.

Omar Quintanilla continues to bat well, going 2 for 3 with a double and a triple.  Since being called up from Las Vegas, Quintanilla has batted .529, including 7 for 11 in June.  He batted in both of the Mets runs.

It was the first walkoff for the Nationals this year, who needed the win to get back at .500 on the year.  They'll try to stay above that line tonight as they send Dan Haren to the mound.  He surrendered two runs in a losing effort against the Baltimore Orioles last week, and is hoping to get his ERA below 5.00.  Dillon Gee is coming off a career-high 12 strikeouts against the Yankees last week, and would love to have a similarly satisfying game to help get his ERA under control.

BIG TEIX
Yesterday we mentioned the work Mark Teixeira did against the Cleveland Indians as he helped the Yankees get off their losing ways.  Well, last night, he did it again.

His 3-run shot in the 3rd inning helped make David Phelps a winner as the Yankees hung on for the 4-3 win.  It was a nervous moment for Yankees fans as Joba Chamberlain surrendered a homer to Drew Stubbs that pulled the Indians within one, but got out of the mess with the lead intact.

The Yankees wrap up the series with a matinee at Yankee Stadium, as C.C. Sabathia takes the mound for the 1:05PM start.  The Yankees then start a west coast swing as they start a four game series in Seattle on Thursday.

GRIMM NIGHT
Every starter for the Boston Red Sox made it on the bases as the Boston Red Sox struck early and often on their way to a 17-5 pummeling of the Texas Rangers.

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Justin Grimm only made it 5 outs before having to be yanked, having already surrendered 8 runs at that time.  The Rangers used 6 pitchers in the game, accumulating as many strike outs combined as Ryan Dempster had for the Red Sox, 6.

In all, 7 home runs were hit at Fenway, four from the bats of the Red Sox.  Mike Carp accounted for one of those homers on his way to a three-for-four game where he batted in 3 runs.  David Ortiz also drove in 3 runs as he hit a double and a triple.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
The Los Angeles Kings cut the deficit in half with their 3-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.

Justin Williams got the Kings on the board 3 minutes into the game with his 6th of the playoffs.  Slava Voynov scored in the 2nd period to give the Kings a 2-0 lead in the 2nd Period.  Just before the intermission, though, Bryan Bickell's 7th of the Playoffs trimmed the deficit, and gave Chicago some momentum heading into the 3rd Period.

But the Blackhawks were unable to solve Jonathan Quick, stopping 19 of the 20 shots he faced, and the Kings prevailed 3-1 at the Staples Center.

Game #4 is slated for Thursday night in Los Angeles.

GOLDEN RULE

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles start their 2013 campaign tonight at East Field as they host the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs.  The Golden Eagles are trying to build off last year's success where they made it to the League Championship Series before falling to the Amsterdam Mohawks.

Queensbury alum Ryan Davis is scheduled to start on the mound for the Golden Eagles this evening.

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles play in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League and are in their 10th season of play at East Field.

First Pitch is at 7PM.

BINGO!
Speaking of the Queensbury Spartans, they're heading to Binghamton this weekend.  The Spartans held on and survived a Cortland four-run 6th inning as they move onto the state semifinals in Class A with their 6-5 win.

It is the first final four appearance for the Spartans since 2003.  They will face Bayport-Blue Point this Saturday at NYSEG Field in Binghamton.

For more on the Spartans win, including reaction and boxscore, read Laura Owens' story for the Post-Star.

In addition to the Spartans, the Fort Ann Cardinals also will be playing in the state final four after disposing of Heuvelton 20-0.  For more about this game, read Greg Brownell's story in the Post-Star.

The baseball team will not be the only Cardinal representative in the state final four this weekend.  The Lady Cardinal softball team punched their ticket for the semifinals at the Morse Sports Complex in Queensbury after their 2-0 victory over Crown Point.  The Lady Cardinals are ranked #2 in Class D.  For a full recap and reaction, take a look at Pete Tobey's story for the Post-Star.

We wish our local high school athletes the best of luck this weekend.

Midday Recap: Oliver Lauridsen scores... the right way!

Matt Slocum | AP

Two days ago, we reported about how Oliver Lauridsen scored his first goal with the Philadelphia Flyers thanks to a Zdeno Chara own goal.  So how did he follow that act?  By scoring one legitimately against the New York Islanders on Thursday.  And it was the deciding goal as the Flyers beat the Islanders 2-1.

Midday Recap 4/22: Just what the Mets needed

It was the kind of game the Mets needed.  So far this season, Jonathan Niese and Matt Harvey have combined for 6 of the Mets wins.  The other two wins have been credited to the bullpen.

Midday Recap 4/20: Harvey Delights, Sweet Caroline

Julio Cortez/AP Credited Photo

Bostonians celebrated the news that the 2nd man wanted in the Boston Marathon bombing was captured, and that feeling of jubilation spread to arenas and stadiums across the country.  Locally, once Dan Miner alerted the crowd at the Glens Falls Civic Center of the news during the Adirondack Phantoms game, they cheered, joined in for "Sweet Caroline", and then chanted "U-S-A".

It was the end of a stressful week for Boston and its supporting communities.

As we pointed out on Twitter:

They deserve the chance to hear the love and support from the people they serve.

Harvey Delights
Getting back to the sports world, the big matchup of the night was the two young pitchers doing battle on the mound at Citi Field.  Stephen Strasburg was hoping to bounce back from two straight losses.  Matt Harvey took a no-hitter into the 7th inning in his last start against Minnesota, and had an 0.82 E.R.A. entering the game after winning his first three decisions.  Harvey would not get deep in the no-hit bid this time, as Strasburg was the first to hit off him in the 3rd Inning.  That would be the 1st of 4 hits that Harvey allowed, only earning 1 run against his ledger as he struck out 7 as the Mets win the 1st of 3 against the Washington Nationals this weekend.

Harvey's E.R.A. now sits at 0.93, with a 4-0 record.

Today's Outlook
Both pitchers allowed two home runs the last time on the mound.  Gio Gonzalez surrendered 7 runs against the Braves last Saturday.  Jeremy Hefner was taken deep twice in a relief appearance to keep him loose on Thursday when the Mets fell to the Rockies.  Coverage: Radio - 1230 FOX Sports Radio, 2:25PM; TV: FOX (FOX 23 WXXA-TV, TWC Ch. 7), 3:00PM

American Hockey Drama
It's a shame the Adirondack Phantoms are not a part of the playoff picture in the American Hockey League this final week of the regular season.  If they were, they would find themselves involved in what is turning out to be a very exciting weekend for the league, as entering play today four teams are tied for the 7th and 8th playoff spots.  Manchester and Hershey were setting 9th and 10th entering play yesterday, and with their wins, they were able to leapfrog both Norfolk and Hershey, who lost.  All four teams have 76 points.  The Connecticut Whale sit with a disadvantage, as they are the only team of the four who wrap up the season tonight.  The other three play both tonight and tomorrow.  That'll make for a lot of scoreboard watching for those four clubs.
