Midday Recap: Oliver Lauridsen scores... the right way!

Matt Slocum | AP

Two days ago, we reported about how Oliver Lauridsen scored his first goal with the Philadelphia Flyers thanks to a Zdeno Chara own goal.  So how did he follow that act?  By scoring one legitimately against the New York Islanders on Thursday.  And it was the deciding goal as the Flyers beat the Islanders 2-1.

NFL DRAFT
32 players found out how they're going to be spending the 2013 NFL season last night.  The Bills offered the 8th pick to the St. Louis Rams, and it was speculated on Twitter last night that the Rams traded up to grab Tavon Austin before the New York Jets could with the 9th pick.  The Jets ended up taking Alabama Cornerback Dee Milliner to cheers at Radio City Music Hall, then got its usual cry of boos when the Jets selected Sheldon Richardson with the 13th pick (from the Bucs).

The Bills, needing a Quarterback, chose Florida State's EJ Manuel with the 16th pick, and the Giants went with Jason Pugh, an offensive tackle from Syracuse.

More surprises could come as the draft resumes this evening for Night #2.  Coverage of the draft tonight will be on 1410 CBS Sports Radio starting at 7PM.

BROOKLYN NETTED
After winning the first game at the Barclay Center, the Brooklyn Nets are finding themselves in trouble after losing game 3 to the Chicago Bulls.  The win gives the Bulls a 2-1 series lead, with Game 4 coming up this Saturday.  Meanwhile, the Miami Heat are the first to 3-0 as they continued their dominance over the Milwaukee Bucks.

BOSTON STRONG
Clay Buchholz is the first pitcher to reach 5 wins this season after the Boston Red Sox defeated the Houston Astros 7-2.  In his five starts, Buchholz has given up only 5 runs, going at least 7 innings in every start.  He's got a 3:1 strikeout-to-ball ratio and an Earned Run Average of 1.19, putting him in early consideration of the Cy Young Award.  [Clay's Stats]
