Mets Lose Series: First Citi Field Series Loss in 2013

It wasn't as strong as Matt Harvey's performances during this season, but Jeremy Hefner just had the best game of his 2013 season.

Just too bad the Mets bats failed to give him the support needed for his first win of the season.

Hefner tossed for 7 innings, giving up three hits and 1 earned run, but couldn't get the run support needed as the Mets fell in the series finale to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-2.

For Hefner, his start made Mets fans groan, after hitting the first batter of the game, Carl Crawford.  He would finish his trip around the bases when Matt Kemp's base hit to left allowed him to score from 2nd for the 1-0 lead.

After that, Hefner calmed down, and the Mets got his name off the decision ledger with David Wright's sac-fly that brought Ruben Tejada home to tie things in the 6th inning.  The Mets had a prime opportunity to take the lead in the 8th inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd base with nobody out, but failed to move the runners when David Wright struck out, Lucas Duda flied out, and Marlon Byrd struck out to keep the game tied at 1.

The 9th inning would be the Mets undoing.  Nick Punto took a 3-1 sinker from Scott Rice to right field for a double to lead off the inning.  After an intentional walk to Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier would line-drive to center, bringing Punto home and Kemp to 3rd base.  A Juan Uribe single would bring Kemp home to give the Dodgers a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 9th, Ike Davis led off with a home run, but that would be as close as the Mets would get, falling 3-2 to the Dodgers in the rubber game of the series.  With the loss, the Mets have lost their first series at Citi Field this season.

TONIGHT'S OUTLOOK
The Philadelphia Phillies come to town for the start of a three-game series.  Tonight, the Mets send Dillon Gee to the mound.  Gee looked good as he and the bullpen combined to shut out the Washington Nationals on Sunday.  But his shortest outing of the season came against the Phillies on April 9th, giving up 7 runs in only 3 innings pitched.  Kyle Kendrick will be on the mound for the Phillies, going 1-1 to start the season.  His one win this season was against the Mets, going 6 innings and striking out 6.  He gave up two solo home runs, one to John Buck and one to Lucas Duda, both coming after the Phillies gave him a five-run cushion in the bottom of the 1st.  Radio Coverage: 6:30PM on 1230 FOX Sports Radio.
