It was the kind of game the Mets needed. So far this season, Jonathan Niese and Matt Harvey have combined for 6 of the Mets wins. The other two wins have been credited to the bullpen.
In Dillon Gee's last start, he was doing fine until the 5th inning unglued him, and brought his third loss of the season against the Colorado Rockies.
So Gee, and the bullpen, needed a confidence boost.
They got that Sunday, shutting out the Nationals 2-0 to win the series. Gee pitched 5 2/3rds innings, striking out 6 while surrendering 3 hits. The Nationals only other hit came off against Scott Rice.
In the batter's box, John Buck added to his home run total with a solo shot in the 2nd inning, and Mike Baxter drove insurance in the 7th inning.
The Mets are off Monday as they await the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Double-Down
Tough doubleheader for the Boston Red Sox, whose emotions were high after their Saturday pre-game ceremony and late-game rally. After dropping the first game to the Royals, Billy Butler's home run in the 8th inning tied the game, and forced extra innings.
In the 10th, Andrew Miller loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, and then proceeded to walk Lorenzo Cain, bringing home what would be the game-winning run.
Three K's from Greg Holland later, the Kansas City Royals would sweep the doubleheader, beating the Red Sox 5-4 in 10 innings.

The final game of the Adirondack Phantoms 2012-13 season ended with a bang as the Phantoms made quick work of the Albany Devils, both figuratively and literally, in a game that only took 2 hours and 5 minutes to complete. The Phantoms won 4-2, powered by two goals from Blake Kessel (pictured).
Sweet Revenge
Last year, the New Jersey Devils earned a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals with Adam Henrique's goal in overtime in game 6, beating the Rangers 3-2 and winning the series 4-2. This year, barely clinging to life, the New Jersey Devils playoff chances were clipped when Ryan Callahan started the scoring for the Rangers 39 seconds in. The Rangers 4-1 victory on Sunday ensured that last year's Stanley Cup finalist would not be among the 16 in the playoffs this year, and brings the Rangers closer to a playoff spot as they widen the gap over the Winnipeg Jets to 3 points with 3 games to go.
In Boston, the Bruins finally earned a victory on home ice for the first time since the bombings at the Boston Marathon as they took down the Florida Panthers 3-0. Jaromir Jagr scored 3:03 in the 1st Period for the Bruins, and Tuukka Rask took first star honors with his 28 saves.
Home Is Where The Heart Is
The first weekend of the NBA Playoffs failed to produce any surprises. In 8 games played this weekend, the home team won all 8. The closest game was the Golden State/Denver game, where the Nuggets won on Andre Miller's layup with 1.2 seconds left to bring a 75-73 win.
The most lopsided win was Oklahoma City's 120-91 win over Houston.
