Saints Shock Wounded Warriors

GLENS FALLS - At the halftime, it looked like the Lake George Warriors were in good position to defend their state crown.

Up 32-19 to the Spa Catholic Saints, the Warriors spent halftime talking in the locker room.  But while the Warriors were talking about their game plans, Spa Catholic was working on their jump shots, having returned to the court with 6 1/2 minutes left in the break out of the customary 10 minutes.

It seemed to do the Saints good, as they came out and chipped away at the Warrior lead, thanks to Evan Pescetti.  Pescetti's 14 points in the quarter helped close the deficit to within 6 at the end of 3, and then powered past the Warriors in the 4th Quarter on their way to the 51-49 win.  Pescetti would finish with 18 points, and Luke Spicer also contributed with 13 hard-fought points.

Joel Wincowski, Section 2's leading scorer, had one last opportunity to give Lake George the win with 2.2 seconds left, but came up short on his 3 point attempt prior to the buzzer.

It left last year's State Class C Champions wondering what would have been.  The Warriors lost their second top-scorer, Andrew Zibro, who sustained broken wrists during a flagrant foul in the Round of 16 game against Middleburgh last week.

And with Joel Wincowski struggling to find the open bucket, it left the Warriors offense vulnerable.  Wincowski was held to 20 points, ten off his season average.  Only one three of his was made, which came in the 3rd Quarter during a foul which gave Wincowski the chance to complete the rare four point play.  Kyle Jones was the only other player to score a three for the Warriors.

The Spa Catholic Saints will play the #1 seeded Hoosic Valley Indians, who won their semifinal game over Greenwich 61-50.  The game will be this Saturday, 3:45pm at the Glens Falls Civic Center, and heard live on 1230 FOX Sports Radio.
