Boys Basketball: Seeding Predictions

Tonight is the final day of the Boys Basketball regular season.  Tomorrow, the committee meets in Saratoga Springs to unveil the brackets for sectionals.

For several teams, tonight's games are one last chance to get the seeding committee to find in their favor when it comes time to place them in a bracket.  For others, it's a time for one last tune-up before the playoffs.

So on this, the final day of the regular season, let's take a look at where we think Section 2's teams are going to be seeded.  The predictions begin after the jump:
Before we begin, we're only going to predict the top eight seeds for each classification.

CLASS AA:
Total teams: 16
Predicted Top Seed: Catholic Central (17-1).

Why?  An impressive 17-1 record that has them winning their first Big 10 title since the Regan Administration, with their one loss coming against Troy in overtime.

The rest of the seeds: 2-Shenendehowa; 3-Guilderland; 4-Shaker; 5-Green Tech; 6-CBA; 7-Ballston Spa; 8-Schenectady

Analysis: Shenendehowa gets the boost over Guilderland on behalf of their win back in January.  It shows you how tough a classification is going to be when 10 wins isn't even going to give you a top 8 seed, as might be the case with Saratoga Springs (11-7) and Columbia (same record).

CLASS A:
Total teams: 14
Predicted Top Seed: Scotia (18-0)

Why?  Running the table through the regular season is deserving of a top seed.  If there's a team that could knock them down a peg, it would be Troy, but that will only come should Scotia not find themselves entering Sectional Seeding Wednesday with an undefeated record.

The rest of the seeds: 2-Troy; 3-Gloversville; 4-Amsterdam; 5-Averill Park; 6-Queensbury; 7-Hudson Falls; 8-Glens Falls

Analysis: The classification pretty much comes down to a Scotia vs. Troy scenario.  Amsterdam, despite a 8-10 record, gets a boost over Queensbury and Averill Park thanks to their win over Troy.  Class A has the fewest teams of any classification, and it shows as teams with double-digit loss records are among the top 8.

CLASS B:
Total teams: 24
Predicted Top Seed: Hoosick Falls (17-1)

Why?  Hoosick Falls is undefeated against teams in New York State.  Their lone loss of the season is against Vermont's Mount Anthony, a contender for the Vermont State Championship year in and year out.  Their resume includes two tight wins over Hoosic Valley, and wins over last year's state champions Lake George and Argyle.

The rest of the seeds: 2-Voorheesville; 3-Mekeel Christian Academy; 4-Cohoes; 5-Catskill; 6-Taconic Hills; 7-Mechanicville; 8-Broadalbin-Perth

Analysis: Class B could be a fun class to watch, with several teams who could easily be the last team standing come March 1st at the Glens Falls Civic Center.  Hoosick Falls may be the #1 seed, but they're going to find Voorheesville to be fierce competition.  The same goes with Mekeel Christian.  When your #5 seed is a 14-3 team, you know you've got a dogfight ahead for the Class B title.

CLASS C:
Total teams: 19
Predicted Top Seed: Lake George (16-1)

Why?  Lake George could see some competition from Spa Catholic for the top spot, but what should give them the push to be the top seed is that their lone loss was against Hoosick Falls.  Hoosic Valley could also be a contender.

The rest of the seeds: 2-Hoosic Valley; 3-Spa Catholic; 4-Waterford; 5-Duanesburg; 6-Greenwich; 7-Berlin; 8-Maple Hill

Analysis: Lake George, Hoosic Valley and Spa Catholic could make the late rounds of the tournament very interesting.  Duanesburg and Waterford could make things interesting as well.  There are 10-win teams that didn't crack this Top 8 list that could also make "C" an interesting tournament, teams like Berne-Knox-Westerlo, Canajoharie, Fort Plain and Rensselaer.

CLASS D:
Total teams: 17
Predicted Top Seed: Argyle (14-2)

Why? Argyle's losses were against teams in higher classes - Lake George and Hoosick Falls.  The Scots have bounced back from their latest loss to the Warriors and are playing some of the best basketball they've played all season, and that could pay dividends.

The rest of the seeds: 2-Germantown; 3-Hartford; 4-Fort Ann; 5-North Warren; 6-Loudonville Christian; 7-Heatly; 8-St. Johnsville

Analysis: Although the tournament could come down to Argyle and Germantown, sleepers like Hartford, Fort Ann and North Warren from the Adirondack League, and St. Johnsville and Northville from the Western Athletic could make it interesting.

Please note: these seedings are predictions and are not to be any official indication of how the seedings will be played out come Wednesday Afternoon.
