Mid-season report - 2019 High School Football

Four weeks down.

Let's take a look and see how teams are faring as we reach the midway point of the 2019 High School Football Season.

It begins with Class AA after the jump.

Shaker has already gone through Guilderland and Shenendehowa, only has to survive a challenge by CBA in Week 7 if they're hoping to make it into Week 9 as the #1 seed [remember, AA is doing an 8-week regular season and thus will only admit four teams to the playoffs].   Shenendehowa and Guilderland will begin to untangle the battle for the AA potential #2 and #3 seeds when they face off this week in Albany County.   CBA's big chance to throw their challenge into the mix comes in Weeks 6, 7 and 8 when they face all three teams ahead of them in the standings.

But the Blue Bison so far appear to be an explosive team and teams are going to have a hard time slowing them down.   The Plainsmen have come the closest to doing so, losing to Shaker 28-14 back in Week 2.

Bethlehem, Saratoga Springs and Schenectady are not out of the mix, but at this point of the season, their remaining four weeks are going to need to be must-wins if they want to be taken seriously for the playoff contention.

Averill Park has looked unstoppable on the top of the Capital Division, and outside of the week 1 sweat that Queensbury endured against Ballston Spa, the Spartans have looked the same.  And these two teams won't face each other until the playoffs, should they continue on the momentum they're riding into October.

But there are teams wanting to include their name in the mix.   Troy dropped a non-conference match against Class AA's CBA, the same team we referenced above for being in the middle of the AA playoff mix. And they're making their way out to the hills of Rennselaer County for a battle for first place this Friday against Averill Park.   Amsterdam will always be a part of the discussion, but has already dropped to Troy, putting them a step behind at this juncture.   The fourth and final team to represent the Capital Division in the playoffs is likely to come down to La Salle or Green Tech, as Columbia and Albany have failed to fire so far in Class A play.

In the Grasso Division, the question of who will be the #1 seed in the playoffs will not be answered until the final day of the regular season when the Burnt Hills Spartans travel to face the Queensbury Spartans.  Queensbury holds serve, after Burnt Hills was shell-shocked against Ballston Spa 9-7 in Week 4.   A loss to Queensbury in Week 7, should these three teams win in the next two weeks, and Burnt Hills will be spending Week 8 on the road, an uncommon thought given the way Class A has played out throughout the past 12 years.  The final spot for the Grasso Division may come down to this Friday's battle between South Glens Falls and Scotia, as these two teams at 1-2 division and 2-2 conference battle down in Schenectady County to see who will hold the tiebreaker should the two tie after Week 7.

No JG3?   No problem.  Glens Falls is rolling in the North Division, outscoring their opponents 192-42 through the first four weeks of the season.  The most their defense has given up was the 16 points surrendered to the Hudson Blue Hawks in a game where the Indians have scored 49.   Schuylerville is clearly the second best team in the division, hoisting a 3-1 division record as they hold the tiebreaker over Broadalbin-Perth by virtue of their 42-7 win in Week 3.   The Black Horses fell to Glens Falls 34-13 back in Week 2.

In the Reinfurt Division, Holy Trinity is showcasing their talent in their first season in Class B.   A big reason for this is their high-profile Quarterback, Joe Tortello, who would of garnished more attention in Section 2 if it weren't for JG3 pushing Glens Falls to their state title.   At 4-0, the Pride have the tiebreaker over Cobleskill through their Week 2 win, and are getting ready for a pair of non-conference games against Class A's Albany and Class C's Cambridge-Salem before wrapping up the season against the Schalmont Sabres.   Cobleskill holds the tiebreaker over Schalmont after the Bulldogs beat the Sabres in Week 1 down in Schoharie County.   Ravena's lone win was a 7-0 defensive stance at Hudson Falls in Week 2.

Week 7 is going to be crazy for deciding Class C's Central Division when the Stillwater Warriors and the Fonda-Fultonville Braves meet up with a top seed potentially on the line.  Mechanicville has the chance to deal the Warriors's hopes for a top seed a blow when the two meet up next week in the Indian Bowl.

Meanwhile, Cambridge-Salem is in good position to take the top spot in the North Division, having already secured a win over second place Greenwich, who has a tiebreaker over Granville after the Witches defended their home turf in Week 2.  It is shaping up to be another season of missed playoffs for Hoosick Falls at 1-2 division/1-3 overall, which is still surprising after the dominant Panther teams we saw at the front half of the decade.

In the south, Voorheesville made a huge statement in their 43-0 blowout win over Taconic Hills.  The Blackbirds lost to Stillwater back in Week 1, which will remain fresh in the minds of the Section 2 seeding committee when they sort out the top seeds after Week 7's matches.

Warrensburg
already survived their first challenge for the top spot in Class D when they beat the Whitehall Railroaders this past weekend.  All is not safe for the Burghers just yet, as they will have to host the Chatham Panthers in two weeks in what could be the battle for the #1 seed, pending what happens this week.   First the Panthers have to defend their home field this Friday when Whitehall takes the long bus ride down to Columbia County.

A lot of great football is still on the way as these divisional standings get sorted out, which should lead to a great Sectional bracket.  While we aren't doing any regular season games, that may change when we get to Week 9, as we may choose to resurrect our High School coverage on FOX Sports Radio 97.9/1230.

Stay tuned...
