High School Football: Ichabod Crane/Hudson Falls Preview

The Hudson Falls Tigers need to correct mistakes.

That's one of the things Bill Strong is pushing as the Hudson Falls Tigers prepare for their cross-divisional match with the Ichabod Crane Riders on Saturday.

And for good reason.

The Hudson Falls Tigers grabbed a Pick-6 in the 4th Quarter down 28-26.  However, the touchdown was called back as the referees had flagged the Tigers for an illegal block in the back, wiping off the touchdown and returning the ball to the Johnstown Sir Bills.

The Sir Bills would soon score to make it a two-possession game, a hole that the Hudson Falls Tigers would be unable to climb out of, to beat the Tigers 42-26.

The penalty hurt, but so too did 3 turnovers.

"[T]hat game came down to a matter of 3 or 4 plays which we turned the ball over," Bill Strong stated.

Hudson Falls will need to correct those turnover miscues if they're hoping to make it to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.  A chance for them to do so will be on Saturday afternoon as they host the winless Ichabod Crane Riders at H.G. Moran Field.

The two teams got a feel for each other last year when the Riders came up to Hudson Falls to play in a crossover game in Week 8.  In that game, Geno Brancati picked up 265 yards on 21 carries and scored 5 touchdowns as the Tigers came away winners 40-12 to win their first game of the season.

Geno Brancati is back in the backfield for the Tigers, picking up 394 yards in the first two games and finding the end zone 9 times.  It'll be a challenge for Ichabod Crane's defense to try to slow him down.

The Ichabod Crane Riders last won at the end of the 2012 season, winning a crossover game against Taconic Hills after getting outed from the playoffs by Schalmont.  The 2012 season marked the only time the Riders have made the playoffs in their short five season history of varsity football in Northern Columbia County.

The Riders are led by Zach Herbst, who is their leading rusher at 45 yards.  He was unable to maneuver around Ravena's defense in their 38-6 loss last week, scoring the lone touchdown for the Riders.  He'll be given the ball by Alden Bolinsky.

For both teams, Saturday's game could give them the momentum for the weeks ahead.  Hudson Falls still has games against the West Division's top teams in Schuylerville and Broadalbin-Perth, as well as the Jug Game against Glens Falls.  Ichabod Crane still has to face the Reinfurt's new team, defending Class B Sectional Champion Schalmont.
