GLENS FALLS - Reed Miner scored three touchdowns and Josh Griffen threw for a pair as the Glens Falls Indians beat the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season 40-20.
After getting the ball from the Indians in the first quarter, the Cohoes Tigers looked to take the early lead as Brandon LaForest connected with a wide-open receiver trying to escape his own end zone, who then turned and ran away for the score. However, that play was called back due to an ineligible man downfield, returning the ball to the Cohoes three yard line. The Tigers were unable to do anything with the remaining plays on the drive, and were forced to punt. Nate Giller's punt only went 15 yards before dropping, setting up the Indians with great field position.
A few short plays later, Josh Griffen connected with Dylan Balcom for the first score of the game. Logan Akins extra point hit off the left post and away.
It was the first of several times the Indians capitalized on Tiger miscues. The Indians later drove down the field, turning over the ball on downs at the Cohoes three, then watched as another Giller punt traveled 15 yards to the 22 yard line, setting up great field position again.
Reed Miner then scored the first of his three touchdowns with a two yard run to make it 12-0.
But the Tigers changed their game plan, centering their offense around highly-praised running back Shelton Alston, who drove much of the field during much of the second quarter, ultimately resulting in a touchdown on a six yard run.
The Indians got great field position from Dylan Balcom, who ran the resulting kickoff 55 yards to set the Indians up, but the Indians would come up empty when a pass from Griffen on 4th and Goal from the two came up incomplete.
The Tigers made the best of the clock, managing it well with fast snaps and long plays, including the 45 yard pass from Brandon LaForest to Shelton Alston that beat the Indians defense for the score to give the Tigers the 13-12 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Indians again capitalized on mistakes, starting with a Shelton Alston fumble on the first play from scrimmage to start the third quarter that led to the Indians go-ahead score, and later would expand their lead after a touchdown when the kickoff after the Indians made it 27-13 bounced in their favor after traveling 20 yards, with Jake Center falling first on the ball to give the Indians possession.
The Tigers didn't give up, getting a 71 yard score from Nick Ernst from Brandon LaForest, closing the gap to 13 points with 5:53 left. But a Glens Falls touchdown pass to Dylan Balcom from Josh Griffen sealed the Indians victory at 40-20.
The last meeting between these two teams was last October, when the Glens Falls Indians entered Cohoes as the #4 seed in the West. The Tigers, #1 seed in the Reinfurt, came away with the victory before falling to Broadalbin-Perth in the Sectional Semifinals.
The Glens Falls Indians (1-1, 2-2) next play a Friday night game as they host the Hudson Falls Tigers (1-2, 2-2) in the Jug Game. The Cohoes Tigers (1-1, 1-3) head down to play Ichabod Crane (0-3, 0-4).
