Every starting pitcher on the New York Mets knows they've got one or two more chances to prove that they should remain in the starting lineup next week with Zack Wheeler coming.
Dillon Gee explained why it shouldn't be him demoted to the bullpen through his pitching, striking out 7 in 6 1/3rd innings as he gave up one run in Wednesday's 5-1 victory.
The Mets used a quick start again on Wednesday to build a 2-0 lead after three straight hits. Lucas Duda added to the lead with his 11th homer of the year in the 4th inning, and then David Wright and Marlon Byrd stamped their 9th of the years in the 6th and 7th innings respectively.
The lone run for the Cardinals came off the bat of Allen Craig, who hit a solo shot in the 6th inning off Dillon Gee.
Shelby Miller gave up 4 runs and struck out 10 in the defeat, his 4th loss of the season.
TODAY: It's Harvey Day, though it doesn't come with quite the fanfare that it did earlier in the season, as Matt Harvey has only earned two decisions in his last 10 starts. Harvey exited the game after 7 innings against the Miami Marlins on Saturday, complaining of some lower back tightness.
His last win came against the Chicago Cubs on May 17th, when he endured 7 1/3rd innings, striking out 6. Harvey did not face the Cardinals this year during the four game stretch at Busch Stadium, but did start against them last year where he gave up 3 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings pitched in a losing effort.
Doing battle against the Mets will be Adam Wainwright. Although Wainwright has won his last 4 starts, his last loss was against the Mets in a day game in St. Louis where he gave up three runs on six hits, while striking out 8. The first Met to strike out against Wainwright this afternoon will be the recipient of Wainwright's 1,000th career Major League strikeout.
