Series Preview: Mets vs. Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals come to plate for the start of a three game series tonight at Citi Field.

St. Louis Cardinals
Record: 41-22; 1st in the NL Central, 1st in the NL, 1st in MLB.
2013 Record against the Mets: 3-1
Scheduled Pitchers:

  • Monday: Michael Wacha (0-0, 5.40)
  • Tuesday: Shelby Miller (7-3, 1.91)
  • Wednesday: Adam Wainwright (9-3, 2.34)
After a strong debut against the Kansas City Royals where Wacha struck out 6 in his 7 innings pitched, he got walloped for 6 earned runs on 10 hits in only 4 2/3rd innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 4th.  Shelby Miller gave up two runs, but struck out 9 as he earned the win in his last start.  Adam Wainwright gave up 7 hits but retired 7 to help earn the victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Having just sent down Ike Davis, Mike Baxter and Robert Carson, the Mets will be looking to rebuild with a new lineup that will include the return of Collin Cowgill and Josh Edgin, plus the call-up of Josh Satin from the Las Vegas 51s.  In 59 games with the 51s, Satin batted a .305 average, including 14 doubles and 9 home runs.  Satin appeared in one game with the Mets last year, striking out as a pinch hitter.

Tonight will be Jeremy Hefner's second career game against the St. Louis Cardinals.  In a no-decision, Hefner allowed only 3 runs on 5 hits as the Mets would eventually lose to the Cardinals 6-3.

The Mets will send Dillon Gee to the mound tomorrow, and then Matt Harvey on Thursday.
