Boys Hoops: Our Top 8 - 2/12

Sectional seedings are determined in one week.

So instead of doing a Top 4 this week for each classification, let's expand and make it eight.

CLASS AA:
1) Green Tech (13-0)
2) Shenendehowa (18-0)
3) Guilderland (15-2)
4) Bethlehem (15-3)
5) Catholic Central (11-7)
6) Christian Brothers Academy (11-7)
7) Schenectady (12-7)
8) Shaker (11-7)

COMMENTS: Green Tech and Shenendehowa will make quite the showdown at the Times Union Center on March 10th.  Guilderland stands the best chance of preventing that match.  Don't forget seedings will be based on league come Sectionals, not overall like the trend is in the other four classes.

CLASS A:
1) Scotia-Glenville (17-0)
2) Amsterdam (14-4)
3) Averill Park (13-5)
4) Troy (11-5)
5) Queensbury (13-5)
6) Glens Falls (8-9)
7) Gloversville (7-11)
8) Mohonasen (6-13)

COMMENTS: Averill Park could help their seeding with a good finish to the season, but it didn't start well with losses to Bethlehem and Guilderland.  They have one more crack at Guilderland, and you have to think that could make the difference between a 2 and 3 seed.  Troy will also be in the mix for the Top 4 seeds.  Queensbury, if they can execute something that hasn't happened in 44 tries, and beat Scotia in the Foothills Council Championship, could help their cause for a Top 4 seed, but otherwise looks almost locked in as the #5 seed.  Mohonasen could be seeded higher than their 8th spot here based on their hard conference schedule, but the edge right now goes to a Gloversville team that is performing well lately outside of their 40 point loss to Scotia.

CLASS B:
1) Hoosick Falls (17-0)
2) Schalmont (15-2)
3) Catskill (15-1)
4) Cohoes (13-5)
5) Broadalbin-Perth (11-6)
6) Voorheesville (13-6)
7) Mekeel Christian Academy (12-2)
8) Hudson (13-5)

COMMENTS: Class B's going to be a fun tournament.  Hoosick Falls may have won the Wasaren League with their narrow win over Greenwich last night, but they are not locked into that #1 seed just yet.  I could see Sectional Seeding Committee members being forced to choose between Schalmont and Hoosick Falls depending on how the Panthers game against Green Tech on Monday goes.  Schalmont has two losses this year, one to Broadalbin-Perth and the other to Green Tech, both great squads.  Catskill suffers from being in a softer league compared to the Colonial.  Cohoes is improving with the return of Brandon LaForrest.  Broadalbin-Perth made things interesting on Friday when they played Amsterdam close, only falling by 3 points.  Mekeel Christian Academy dropped their game last weekend against Syracuse Institute of Technology, which begs to wonder how they will fare against schools of their size.

CLASS C:
1) Lake George (17-1)
2) Greenwich (15-3)
3) Waterford-Halfmoon (15-3)
4) Hoosic Valley (13-5)
5) Canajoharie (11-6)
6) Spa Catholic (12-6)
7) Stillwater (10-7)
8) St. Johnsville (11-5)

COMMENTS: Unlike last year, when Hoosic Valley took the #1 seed away from Lake George, the Warriors should have the #1 seed regardless of what transpires in the Adirondack League Championship on Saturday.  The Warriors' one loss was by two points, against a team that is currently in position to take the #1 seed in Class B.  Had Greenwich knocked off Hoosick Falls on Wednesday, they could have surprised the Warriors and stole the seed away.  It's good to see Waterford get some respect, earning an honorable mention by the NYSSWA, but their league's difficulty would make it tough for the Fordians to obtain a seed higher than #3.  With the split in their two league games, Canajoharie and Spa Catholic might be seeded side-by-side.

CLASS D:
1) Germantown (14-2)
2) Fort Ann (14-3)
3) North Warren (14-3)
4) Fort Edward (12-6)
5) Northville (11-7)
6) Argyle (12-6)
7) Loudonville Christian (11-6)
8) Heatley (8-10)

COMMENTS: Germantown could have been ranked #2 if Fort Ann was able to beat Fort Edward on Friday.  Instead, the loss by the Cardinals to the Flying Forts returns them to #2 for the time being, with the Adirondack League Championship and next week's rescheduled game against Schroon Lake coming a long ways to determining whether or not the Adirondack League will scoop up the #1 seed.  North Warren will be a team to watch out for.  If the Cougars can put the difficulties of a couple weeks ago behind them, they should be able to make the visit to the Glens Falls Civic Center for the Semifinals and/or finals.  Fort Edward is a team to watch out for, as they prove with wins against Fort Ann and Argyle that they improved as the season progressed.  Northville stood a chance to be seeded high in the tournament, but some tough losses the last couple weeks have pushed them back to 5th right now, and even there Argyle could leap past them.  There will be some good teams playing in Stillwater on February 28th.

Next Tuesday, expect a preview of the seedings on this blog.
