These seedings are determined on where a team finished in the CDHSHL point standings, with each game within the league being worth either one or two points for a win. There are procedures for ties, which can be found here.
As the season wraps up, let's take a look at some of the latest news and notes from across the league:
- What a huge win for the Niskayuna/Schenectady Mohawks last night. They scored two goals in the second period as they handed Saratoga Springs their third league loss of the season, and second in a row after a huge win over Shenendehowa last week. The Mohawks have won four in a row, and could be the hot team to stay clear of in sectionals. The win streak has given the Mohawks the opportunity to host a quarterfinals round game come next Wednesday.
- Meanwhile, that loss for Saratoga Springs coupled with last Saturday's loss against La Salle, has killed all chances for the Blue Streaks to win the Delvecchio Cup from the Shenendehowa Plainsmen. Saratoga Springs is done for the season, while Shen will play their game-in-hand tonight against the Bethlehem Eagles. The Delvecchio Cup is the trophy given to the team who earns the most league points during the regular season. Shenendehowa won the cup last year as well.
- It's been a great season for the Tri-Falls Rivermen. The combined squad of Glens Falls/Hudson Falls/South Glens Falls currently sit in third place in the standings, still with a legitimate opportunity to host a game during the playoffs next week. The Rivermen have 10 points, but have two teams breathing down their neck with 9 points. They finish their season tonight at La Salle, and a win coupled with a Bethlehem loss will guarantee the Rivermen a playoff game at the Glens Falls Rec Center next Wednesday.
- Queensbury falls victim to an unfortunate consequence of being the lone Division 2 team in Section 2. As the only representative, they get an automatic berth into the state tournament. But because of that, the Spartans will play their final regular season games this week, however won't see competition again until Saturday, March 6th, when they travel north for the NYSPHSAA Regionals. That means 22 days of inactivity for the Spartans before they have to face the Section VII representative in the state tournament.
- Sectionals begin with the play-in game between the #8 and #9 seeds on Monday at the Bethlehem YMCA. Shaker/Colonie will play as the #8 seed and CBA will be the #9. The winner of that game will play Wednesday at the #1 seed.
- For individual honors, Shen's Peter Russo has run away with the points title, scoring 42 points (16 goals-26 assists) heading into tonight's finale. That's 8 points better than Jared Thomas for the Rivermen, who has 34 points. Peter Russo also leads the assists race, with 5 more assists than Jared Thomas. However, the goal race is tighter, with Russo holding second to Niskayuna/Schenectady's Evan Maloney, who has 17 goals.
